Farewell My Friend

It is with great sadness that I share this.

Last night Phyllis passed away in her sleep.

She was very active yesterday and I should have seen that as a sign. She left the coop for the first time in days and just like in old times she positioned herself under my feet.

I just finished making arrangements for her cremation. Mrs BY Bob wants to finally let her be in the house with us.

It will never be the same here. She was my shadow when I was outside. I'm certain for the rest of my life I will check my feet to make sure that I'm not going to step on her.

Be at peace my dear friend. You will never be forgotten.
I am so sorry, huge hugs to you and your wife. Loosing a pet and friend is never easy. This is not what I expected to read this morning. I was hoping to hear of pips in the eggs. This news brings me back to when I lost Drumstick. He passed the morning when his final clutch of chicks began hatching which resulted in my lovely Corona. In my grief someone and I cannot remember if it was a family member or a friend on here shared a saying that helped just the tiniest bit. I would like to pass it on to you my friend in hopes of comfort in the next few days.
"When one life ends, another begins."
I pray you find happiness in times of remembrance of Phyllis. I pray the difficulties of the hatch are over and in the next few days find joy in the new little lives that begin. I believe keeping one was not in the plans. I hope for you and your dear wife that there is one, a special one who will be a pullet. I feel you will spot her early on and realize while not related to Phyllis she is her last gift to you.

Phyllis was 4 3/4 years old. It feels so very young.
I wonder what the lifespan is for Polish. Would it be that catch all grouping of 3-5 yrs average for poultry?

It’s one of the reasons I was happy to let Bert stay on, with Mr P now over 3 yrs old it’s started me wondering about their lifespan.

That is so sweet. Thank you for those thoughts. Yes, Mrs BY Bob stated emphatically this morning that we are keeping any polish pullet that hatches.

How very sad 😔. I’m so sorry to read this loss. She was our Phyllis and a very special hen.

Betty would like to add she is saddened to hear her Aunt Phyllis has passed and she will do her best to be as glamorous as she was.

I have been using my evaporative cooler this week in the Hen House but the fan was of more use really, but today the humidity now below 50% so I should see some nice cooling effects - I’ll document it for us all tonight when I run the unit. I know yesterday with the humidity it wasn’t overly effective. But the movement of the air at least helped the poor old heavily feathered hens who really feel the heat. I put a couple ice packs in the water to help further cool things down.

EDIT - I should add that the humidity has been around 80% so far.

It’s currently 81°F with a humidex of 88°F.

I would love to have something to really help old Lulu cool down, the fan really isn’t that great for her.

Big sister Owly here,

Well done my dear, that is a fine start on a beard to be proud of. I see you are taking mine and our esteemed Aunt Aurora's advice of eating spicy snacks. Have you tried the spiciest of snacks horse flies and yellowjackets or wasps yet? They really promote excellent beard growth. Horse flies are my personal favorite. Spicy and juicy.
