Thank you all for the nice welcome back. 🙂

Oh I was thinking of you last week! Hello!!!! So glad to hear from you!

Red Squadron that’s awesome 👍 let us know their names when you get a chance, unless you’re like me with the 3 Buff Orps and can’t tell them apart teeheehee.

Oh I am loving your new coop, it will be amazing when finished! It looks great now - wow so much space and light - your hubby is awesome.

Ok I’ll stop babbling - I love your red squadron ♥️

How I tell them apart...that's the question. I was thinking of getting little colored leg bands. Or I'll just not bother. lol. My husband is no more handy than me. 😂. In fact, I'm probably handier..but he has no equal when it comes to manual labor. It sure helps this is our second time building one like this. A freestanding building would be a whole different ballgame.

Then my 2 cents: let them have the run too.

I'd love to get them in there this week. Next weekend it's only supposed to be in the low 80s. But I don't think there's any way. My husband works 10-hour days Tuesday and Thursday, 4-9 pm on Wednesday, and I work all week. I may try to get some done this week while he's gone. We'll see. If we don't...there's the run and we'll chase them in at night.

Anything Can Be a Roost

Aster is flying everywhere and roosting. Today it was the wheel barrow. Good thing it was full.

Oh the little chicklets are so smart. Day 3 of spending the night outside and what do they do? They put themselves to bed in the tote. 30 minutes before dark I might add. They also got their first albeit brief adventure outside the coop. Me and mom were out in the early morning before the heat hit. We were taking a break and had our chairs in front of the coop door in the shade. Adele was on top of the tote just eye balling mom. I told her if that door was open within a minute she would have a visitor on her shoulder. Mom just swings the door open and tells me she is not wrangling them back inside. Sure enough they stampede out and Adele heads straight for mom. It was actually what she wanted. She wanted to get a good look at this "mystery" chicken that snuck in with the silkie hatch as she has called her. Adele is now mom approved. To be honest, the silkies have never been her thing. She likes my other breeds better but to each their own. The buff orp, speckled sussex and Marans and mixes are more to her taste. Judy and Spot are her constant companions when she mows grass. They follow her and the mower looking for the bugs. The chicks got 10 minutes of exploring and then they drew attention to themselves from the big girls. They panicked and tried to run into the stalls so I herded them back into the coop. It was a good first time out, but today was just not the time to learn to avoid being stepped on.

I’m about 100 pages behind. Keep trying to catch up before posting. (I should know better.)

Unfortunately it is sad news that prompted me to go ahead and post. We lost our Sassy girl last night. She had been doing better, had gained weight back up to over 4 lbs after being down to just over 2 lbs and was obviously feeling better. But I knew it probabaly wouldn’t last long, and a few days ago started acting a little off again, and spending time camped in a nest box. She hadn’t laid since May, so I knew she probably had another lash egg she was trying to get out. Yesterday morning she seemed uncomfortable, and I gave her some calcium hoping it would help her and put her back on Baytril again. Last night she was obviously struggling, and I knew if she didn’t manage to pass whatever she was struggling with that she probably wouldn’t make it until morning. Gave her another calcium and did what I could to make her comfortable, but unfortunately I was right. She apparently passed not long after that.

Farewell my Sassy little girl. I’m sorry you had to leave us so soon (she was just over 2 years old), but I hope I made these last two months of extra time I tried to give you worth living for you. I’m glad you got to spend some time with the new little firecrackers (will try to post updates on them in a few days). At least you and Goldy are together again, I know you searched for her and called for her for several weeks after we lost her.

Sassy from the start, she was the first to fly up in my back.

The second to start laying eggs.

Enjoying some time outside in the hospital coop I bought (more later on the bargain I got).

Teaching the firecrackers about the Way of the Chicken. Including that scratch is good, but to respect their elders.

And her final picture, with her favorite treats before we laid her to rest.

I am sad you lost her but she really did have a good life with you, and it is lovely to see you back. Would a link to the synopsis help you catch up?
Here is last week’s, and the prior week is linked at the start so you can Daisy chain back as many weeks as you need.
