Just what the doctor ordered.I just indulged myself to about 30 minutes of sheer bliss outside with the chicks.
Adele, just as sweet as ever. Immediately in my lap and once I started petting her she went limp with her head hanging low. She stayed on me somewhere the entire time I was out there.
The silkies, 2 things have worked in my favor with taming them. The biggest has been they are now outside in the coop. They can come to me at will and I do not have to reach for them scaring them. The 2nd is they are curious and jealous of any attention Adele gets. If I want to touch a silkie all I have to do is have Adele in my lap. They notice and have to come see what she is doing. This allows me to pet them once they are up in my lap. The first time or two they are nervous and fly away, but if they give me just 3 seconds to do a crop massage they are hooked. Then it is a domino effect of everyone else needing to see what is happening. Today I ended up with 5 chicks on me and the other 2 on the tote seeing what is happening. I also had ALL the adults on the outside looking in knowing what is going on and wanting their fare share of scratching.
We can grow year-round but we don't. I don't like to garden winter veggies so the hens get to romp in the garden beds all winter. DH has container pots of herbs, bell peppers & chili peppers he moves under the patio roof during winter and the plants continue to produce 2-3 years in a row w/o needing a greenhouse. An oasis in the makingChicken heaven.
Can you grow things year round there? Or does it get too hot or cold to do so?
Which county do you live in. If I had to guess, San Bernardino CountyWe can grow year-round but we don't. I don't like to garden winter veggies so the hens get to romp in the garden beds all winter. We love fruit trees/bushes like figs, plums, peaches, apricots, mangos, persimmons, blueberries, etc, but ants, June beetles, rats, squirrels, pests, are not worth it! We have Lemon, Pink Grapefruit, Pomegranates, and Strawberry/Cherry Guavas ~ the kind of fruits that discourage most pests!

East San Gabriel Valley about two miles from the mountains. Used to live at the foot of the mtns yrs ago but after the Bradbury/Duarte Mesa fires I moved further away. Where we live now is still too close to mtn fires but still better than by the mtns.Which county do you live in. If I had to guess, San Bernardino County
I love the white tail and topknot
My drive to the mountains is 45 minutes away. I’m safe in the valley, but I have mountain property too. At 7500ft near camp Nelson. I always worry about it getting burnt out.East San Gabriel Valley about two miles from the mountains. While working on front yard remodeling we got to watch this mtn fire for floating embers. The water drop planes and bucket helicopters work diligently to save the expensive estates below.
