AMERICANA CHICKEN 08-21=2024.jpg

I know there have been some animated discussions in the past about the merit, or not, of feathered leg chickens. I have a question for those of you who are used to them, Marans and Silkie keepers.
My rooster Théo has feathers on his legs and they grow really bad, often ingrown and making weird lumps. Usually it sorts itself out on it's own, but a few days ago I noticed he has an ingrown feather that seems to be turning into an inflamed cyst. There is some red underneath and a small white dot that looks like it could possibly be pus. Drawing salve for a few days did nothing. Any opinion on whether it's a good idea to try to bathe and drain it or if I should I just leave it alone ?

I meant to share some mugs of reprobative chickens yesterday. But we lost our last ex-batt, our dear Nougat, and I didn't feel like posting. I hope you'll forgive me for adding confusion to the days of the week and posting those today. I'm adding a two-fer for good measure.

Chipie (still broody and angry).

Kara and Alba are opposite. Black Vs white, big and fluffy vs skinny with brittle molting feathers. They do share one thing in common, both have bumblefoot again 🙄.

I am sorry to hear about Nougat, seems our dear feathered friends have been passing a lot this summer. But I have to say I am very happy she had a marvellous place with you to live her final days - thank you for taking her in.

As for Théo’s ingrown feather, I would soak it or put a poultice on it to soften it, and hopefully it will burst on its own, then if you can find the feather, pluck it out. If it won’t rupture on its own you may have to lance it and try hauling the ingrown feather out.

A good scrub with an antimicrobial soap like Betadine will clean it up afterwards. He does seem to have rather poor feathering on his legs and feet, not sure what can be done to prevent any further ingrown ones…

Bert had a broken feather on his foot and he was limping around a couple days, so I fished around the wound and was able to grab hold of the broken feather and haul it out. It was really stuck in there! Those feathers are really tough!

Once I hauled it out he was almost immediately better.

I sure hope wee Théo gets sorted soon.

From the moment I enter the coop now I am swarmed by all the chicks. They have zero fear of me and now fight to get the best spots being my shoulders and head. No treats involved either, a treat to them is now a crop massage. 2 days ago I saw a post for 3 silkie chicks that were 7 weeks old for sale. They were about 15 minutes away so yes, I looked, and I looked long and hard. 2 blacks and a reddish one, think Ezzie's coloring. One thing I noticed right away is 2 out of the 3 and with the 3rd I am leaning to they are boys. Their combs was a dead give-a-way already. They are wide and already starting to get bumpy. My littles turn I think 10 weeks old Thursday going into Saturday morning. 3 weeks older then the ones listed. While I was out with them and they were on top of me anyway I got each one and looked at their combs. Narrow and flat, not one of them are as wide as the chicks pictured. This could change and change fast, but, by now even Branch's comb was wider then theirs are. I am torn. I wanted girls, I have had a time getting silkie pullets. I cannot believe this is happening now of all times. Yes I know if they are indeed all girls I am blessed and will finally have 7 silkie hens. I know boys are listed all the time and I can find a rooster if I have to. Since Branch's passing though I have been counting on at least 1 son. I actually have been open to a son since the day they hatched. Right now I feel the universe is cruel.
I really should come visit you…. See the horses…. Drop off a cockerel….

You know be neighbourly 😉

Tiny trims, wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing but also not super confident? I'm pretty shaky after my allergic reaction from dinner. I'm okay now.

This is how they greeted me, they had heard tales of these mealworms in the bag...was today the day they would feast?

Not sure if I trimmed enough but she can see straight ahead now, they aren't covering her eyes fully.

And a lil wattle wednesday action

You can really see the size difference in their pompoms here!
(Yes, they all feasted on mealyworms this fine day)
Bonus
Looks like Tricksy has reddened up a lot. Someone squeaked out their first crow this morning, which lad was it?

And there it is!!

:barnieThat’s what I am afraid of.
That’s exactly what is happening here. Soon as Xzit leaves the nest, Coco jumps in, lays, and then goes away. Even Dakota is doing that too. I put new bedding in the coop. Sprayed out the boxes first. They don’t want to use the coop :barnie :idunno
