It is always nerve wrecking introducing birds I have raised myself. Most times though my biggest worry is teaching them about the horses. For the last 2 years even if I brooded them myself I could always count on Branch stepping up and watching over them. I also knew Bubba would be good with them, he would not go out of his way to interact with them, but never tried to hurt them and would protect them. I do not have that now. I have a young game rooster who is really just learning the ropes. I believe he learned some things from his time with Bubba and some of the bossier hens. He definitely has grown up in the few weeks he has been around and I see promise in him. That does not change the fact that he is a game rooster, he is young and I really do not know if in his past he was around chicks. Now lets add on that I for sure have 1 cockerel in the group, who this morning proved he is dumb when it comes to older roosters. Julio is going to need to learn what he did this morning was bad manners. Julio is also very small, and Randy could really hurt him right now. The chicks want out and about, I am going to give them more time soon. The girls, I will watch and let them intermingle while I am out with them. Randy, I am not ready to trust Randy with any of them yet and I want controlled meetings. If they head to him so will I so I can intervene if need be.
👍. With you there ;)
This can save a lot of injuries

So sorry for your sweet little guy. It hurts me to see animals (or people) in pain!

How long ago did your family take their pet to the vet? Prices have jumped drastically in the last year or so.

My DD was told by the rescue people the surgery for the rescued dog's eye would be $300 to $500. The surgery costs went up since the quote & cost over $1000 so you may not have been overcharged.

& forget dog-grooming maintenance. One grooming session can be $100 at a reputable experienced in-demand groomer!

i'm thankful I don't have a dog or cat to pay for the needful vaccinations & treatments & meds required. Chickens cost me enough when I choose to take a bird to my vet yet still a lot less $$$ than licenses, vaccinations, teeth cleaning, meds, treatments required w/ dogs. I love dogs & cats but just can't afford their proper care w/rising inflation :(.

A neighbor went into home foreclosure & when they vacated they just abandoned their dog & cat! Why do people do that?!
That's the unfeeling self-serving low life human species for you. A lot of animals have more heart .

Well, because they can't afford them. Many local shelters in our area require you to pay a surrender fee. I'm not sure what it is now, but in 1989 when I found a couple of stray cats near my new living situation, and couldn't keep them - when I caught them and brought them to a shelter, it was a $10 per cat surrender fee. When you are already broke, you can't afford that.
Had they cared for their animals in any manner or form , they would have at least informed everyone in the area of their plight and if they were on social media they could have contacted trusted friends and family.
I'm sorry but just dumping them on the street is unacceptable .

I've lost my home in the past and held onto my dog for dear life. It was a horrible situation with all odds stacked against us, but he's still with me today
Many time, if they get rental units or homeless housing, no pets are allowed. They are also stressed and traumatized themselves. For most people, I don't think it is malicious - it is more being overwhelmed, embarrassed, and no resources (physical nor financial) to invest in the pets, too. They are embarrassed, overwhelmed. broke, and worried about their own survival.
Same as written above. Word of mouth can in a lot of situations go a very long way.
Some shelters in the NE have gotten better, but they still ask for a fee for surrender. (You have to actively say you can't afford it & ask for it to be waived). It would be nice if people who know the family soon to be evicted could help relieve the burden by asking about the fate of the pets & if they could help them by accompanying the parents/adults to a shelter with the pets (and maybe even offer to pay surrender fees if there are any in your area)

I don't excuse abandoning pets - that is inexcusable. But, I can understand how it happens, and, quite frankly blame BOTH the family that abandons them AND surrounding people who are aware but don't take action on the pet's behalf. My first cat was a rescue that had been found in an apartment (that had been empty for 6 weeks) She had 4 kittens, all were emaciated and one kitten died. I think the only reason they weren't all dead is momma drank from the toilet. When all were healthy & had shots, etc, the kittens were adopted, but no one wanted Momma _ she was thought to be 4 years old; she lived with me for 12 years. She was the best. sweetest, most affectionate cat I have ever known! I named her 'Truffles', and, given that I went through a rough patch around the time I adopted her, I can honestly say she helped save my life.❤️❤️
That's a beautiful story 😍
The family could have left bags of food around at least. Thank goodness you saved them
My current kitty (Cleo)- also a rescued adult cat, is about 14-15 y.o. and still going strong. I love her dearly and she is sweet - but such a different personality than Truffles - and though it has been almost 12 years since Truffles passed, I still miss her today!
❤️

The weather wasn't good yesterday so she was out the back for most of yesterday

Today is so much better for her

Hmmm, seems the camera battery was dead...so in the morning, once it is recharged, I can post pics.
Batteries… bane of my existence this week. Second time my phone battery died and shut the phone down so my alarm failed to wake me.

The horses and chooks were ok with the extra hr sleep 😁
Wait. Who is that good looking fella?
Is that Mr. Little Chicken?
yep but I am sure I have posted that photo before.

He is such a character - beats the crap out of Rosario. Then the hens go and beat the crap out of him 😆

That’s thanks for you.
