Depends

Depends on the particular hen, on their breeding line/genetics, on age when fall comes, a whole bunch of things. Does she look like when is starting to get red combs and waddles?? Up here, if they weren't already starting - or getting really, really close right now...they would most likely hold off until Feb. (I've only had one or two hens that have started to lay after Nov. 1st, but before late Jan/early Feb.) :idunno :idunno:confused::idunno

That said, you are in a much more southern latitude than I am, so you may not have the same experience as me. A woman from Virginia moved to our area about 5 years ago, and panicked her first fall here...she asked me about the sudden drop in laying of her hens she brought with her.....it was because we have a much more drastic loss of light than they did in the more southerly state of Virginia - they slowed down, but never stopped laying there - and the slow down was much, much more measured. She was afraid something was wrong (as you know, if hens are sick or something, egg laying is frequently the first thing they stop to help with self preservation.), But, nope, her hens were fine and started laying again as usual in the early spring!

@Logar
It depends on the bird as they are mutts. But the most common thing I have seen people say is between 22 and 26 weeks

That is a good general estimate, but again, this time of year...that can go out the window depending on time of hatch, hen, and the ensuing decrease of daylight.
I just had an old guy tell me that it isn't the light so much as warmth. He said his parents build a brick chicken coop with a wall mounted heat source (not always a heat lamp) when he was growing up. Time wise, I'm guessing 1950s ish.

The idea was having a place the hen felt comfortable and was warmer than outside by a noticeable amount. Never run across this before as "everyone" says it's the amount of daylight. But they also say hens won't/can't lay in the dark and @Ponypoor can attest that infra-red is enough light for them to see by. This is an interesting thought, and now I want to try testing it.....

Figuring out how to work that is going to be the challenge. Wonder if I can figure out how to mount those heating pads from the ceiling of the lower nest boxes so they warm both the bottom and top at the same time....

I’m planning on flying over Yellowstone national Park soon, but wow there’s so many FAA regulations and park restrictions to deal with. :barnie My hard deck is 2000 feet above ground. I can’t fly lower than that to take pictures. The park rules for private planes can change depending on ground activity, migratory birds, (possible bird strikes), herds of larger animals moving throughout the park. So I’m doing my research and choosing the best times to go.

You end up staying in the area, message me. We can figure something out.

Flopsy is lame.

I have no idea what the issue is but I can hear a click or clunk on her right leg at her hip/pelvis. She doesn’t flinch or anything and she can flex her toes. But she can barely weight bare.

So she is now on ‘stall rest’ in the crate for the foreseeable future. I gave her some Tylenol and supper which she was eating with gusto when I left her there for my supper.

I will re-evaluate her status tomorrow when I get home from work.

OMG George is going to be the death of me. I am going to have to spend every waking moment saving him from himself. Today he went after the neighbors basset mix. Banjo is a good boy, when he is let out to play with the kids he gets the zoomies and runs around like a maniac. He occasionally cuts into our yard but he has never in 4 years looked twice at the chickens. I'm out with the chickens and have all the chicks gathered around me by the building. Here comes Banjo zooming through the yard and George flogs him and chases him out of the yard. Banjo's owner was laughing so hard she had tears rolling down her face. She loves George and calls him a little punk rocker chick. I've never had a young Cockerel this crazy, it has to be a polish thing.

I am seeing a pattern here. George has went after the cats, Russ and now Banjo when I am outside with them. Once again after he "protected" me from some danger he came running back and fell asleep in my lap. For me personally this is a new cockerel behavior that I have not dealt with. Going foreword I do not know how to interpret the behavior. Am I going to have a Tiny Terror on my hands?

Mr P has been picked at again on his rump. And soaked with blood yet again. Those rootin toottin hens.

I cleaned him up the best I could, and sprayed him with some Alu-spray, and his topknot with some Blu-Kote.

That’s it - that.is.it. He is no longer allowed to go out with any of the hens except his original gals. At least until spring. Poor Mr P 😣

Depends upon the bird. Also depends upon the parentage.

I am sorry to laugh - I know it is something you need to deal with - but the image that brings to mind made me laugh out loud!
