My Exchequer is a nut. She got to five pounds, and she didn't lay eggs every day of the year. She was advertised as being a 3 pound, 360 eggs a year bird. Nope. Josey decided that wasn't good enough for her. She isn't laying right now, and she's at 4 pounds due to a molt.

Yep, just cuz a Leghorn has been crossbred to create other Leghorn colors doesn't mean they retain the prolific egg-laying genetics of the parent White Leghorn. Our Buff Leghorns supposedly were to lay white eggs but we got tinted eggs & not a good layer either.

Crossbreeding muddles genetics.

Difference between Light Brown Leghorns & Dark Brown Leghorns? The Dark Browns are basically mostly chocolate brown while the Light Browns have more colors resembling Partridge colors (usually hatchery stock). Leghorn roos have a stately stance but I love the vibrant plumage in Welsummer roos a tad more. Both Leghorn & Welsummer roos have bits of white tuft feathers at the base of their tails even the Dark Brown Leg has the white tufts. Must be a Red Jungle Fowl genetic history

Dark Brown Leghorn roo

Light Brown Leghorn roo ~ so colorful

Light Brown Leghorn hen usually sold by hatcheries as just "Brown Leghorn" but in fact should be identified as "Light Brown"

Welsummer roo looks so much like a Leghorn roo yet these are medium brown to dark egg or speckled brown layers

My thoughts:

1. Beautiful birds.

2. The dark brown likely has Mahogany in the red/gold gene.

3. Buckeyes and partridge rocks have very similar coloring.
