Wish us luck. We both should already be in the swamp, but mom did not sleep well last night. Hope to be ready and over there in 45 minutes to a hour. It has been 2 years since I have had a chance to go deer hunting, I'm going this morning. Whether we see one or not, being over there just sitting quietly waiting is one of my happy places. I can even appreciate the hawks that call the swamp and hillside home in their natural environment and not stalking my chickens. When they are not flying over my yard they are beautiful birds. The irony is going to be, we are deer hunting, we might see a doe which right now is illegal to harvest. I can guarantee you we will see about 100 squirrels that are absent when we squirrel hunt.
Are the deer walking or running today?
You’re hunting, so it’s deer season I reckon. So I’m sure that they are running today. :idunno:old

All I ask is a nice antlered buck show up this morning. The rack does not matter, field dressed I would like him to be at least 120lbs. That is where our saying of "if it is not bigger then the dog it walks" comes from. Using my 30-30 so have a good 250 to 300 yard range. From the weekend we know the rut is on full swing so they could come walking or running by. All he needs to do is pause for just 2 seconds that is it.

Remind me to never wear my jackalope helmet, anywhere near you. I’m sure I will get shot.

Late mugsView attachment 3985852Tuff is settling down...finally and showing some of his mama's build (still don't know if she's Pippa or Maizie). End on profile is the leaner leghorn look of grandma Nellie.

View attachment 3985853And Whiskey is looking great...while still moulting a bit.

View attachment 3985854Cardhu has managed (so far) avoiding the rumpled look, but has turned her head and neck into spotted bronze with the new feathers. I hadn't realized how much she'd turned blonde until the new feathers started showing.

View attachment 3985855Poor Indigo did this almost overnight. (Lark has yet to show any signs of moulting). It's not slowing her down in the slightest.

View attachment 3985856Mera has gone in patches and looks to be past the miserable phase. She's got more spots than ever before.
Cardhu sure turned out lovely didn’t she ♥️

Everyone has such gorgeous flocks, it’s astonishing how many colours and varieties chickens come in.

Keep those photos coming I love seeing them 🥰

My question is what do you use to haul away a carcass from his dropping point?? 2 ladies carry it or drag it or ?? Is it skinned on site?? So many questions?? Years ago a neighbor went deer hunting & the party did their own skinning. We were given some meat but it was inedible ! There was so much coarse bristle hairs embedded in the meat it was worse than coarse German Shepherd dog hair !

Good luck!

I haven’t heard from Justin so don’t know if he got some venison or not.

It’s bow season here at the moment, my neighbour is out back of the barn in the bush. He makes enough noise there aren’t any deer to be seen.

Always a worry when they are out there with the horses in the back paddock. I really should close the gate to that paddock….

It’s a bright sunny day today, but cold (+1C right now), the chooks will get a chance to go outside this evening.

I checked the camera and Laverne was digging through the straw with the rest of Mr P’s groupies.

Our friend got their moose last month, they gut, skin and quarter it for hauling out where it drops. Big bull moose bigger than my Thoroughbred, no way to get it out unless they do that. Then back-pack the quarters out to the camp. They have a quad but need to get to the quad!
