The chooks are all in their places. And I am out of breath.
I made a mistake and closed the door to the run prematurely. The three littles were in the run waiting for mama. Nacho screamed at me as I opened the door for her to go in. Crazy long legged jungle mama!

Awww she didn’t really mean it I am sure 😊 if she didn’t like it there she wouldn’t have chosen you as her Hooman protector.

This? I could wedge it into the side vent slots above the nest boxes in the coop. Expensive, for how little I would need

I think that someone on here uses a roll of furnace filter 'fabric' that they said last year worked well. ? @Sally PB ? maybe? I'm not sure. If so, I would imagine that it lets air through (needed as furnace filter), but would probably stop snow going through (and would imagine it would significantly reduce drafts from high winds - give more resistance than open space, but certainly not stop winds/air flow)

I happened to buy (last year) a fiber runner (the fabric type you put into window boxes & such, but this was a runner - thought I might use it on the path for traction....but then realized it would be a pain in the A** to shovel over when more snow arrived) I ended up using it on my new goose house turned chicken coop for this winter over the high vents (roof is angled, plywood sides stop about 8" short of roofline in back.....so angled area, 8" high back of coop side, about 20" high front of coop side...that with the super cold and strong winds...decided to unroll and affix to north (windy) side of coop....and put a feedbag full of leaves on inside that covers about 1/2 of height of mesh in front to reduce open area - between the two is working GREAT.

I am not sure my rolled matt is coconut fiber, but it does look something like this

That said, if you can find furnace filter rolled, the white might make it brighter than the fiber mat, which is a drab brown so does darken the coop some...but since it is on the north side, there is still plenty of light from other sides.

Edit to add: maybe this is what ? @Sally PB ? uses? For some reason I had all white filter material in my mind. Somewhat reasonable for 7.5'. Would this work for you, @ChicoryBlue ??

One of These Hens is Not Like the Others

I went out the other day and Aster was dust bathing alone in the run. Everyone else was lounging in the main coop.

Today I caught this on film.

I really need to add another active hen this year so Aster has someone to explore with. Lady Featherington hung around Glynda because they grew up together. Clearly Aster does not have that relationship with her.
She’s incredibly gorgeous, Bob. I love her activity. I agree she would like an active buddy.

I will send you my measure of snow and cold in that case!

And I am so happy Turkey is doing great with the flock. Can’t wait to see some more photos around the first of March 🤭
Honestly, as long as we do not loose power, and I can continue to have success with not having frost bite, I do not mind the weather.

We had a mild winter last year and this past summer we paid dearly for it.

Yellow Jackets, I cannot remember last time yellow jackets were so bad.

Ticks, omg ticks were terrible and were out early. Fleas were bad as well. Our cats and Ceecee are on flea and tick meds, which normally works great. This year it did not and for 2 months had a war on fleas with the cats.

I will also say the snow is beautiful. When I am not outside working in it that is.

We could design the perfect weather.
- one week a year of temperatures well below freezing to manage down pests
- each year just one 3-4 foot snowstorm for beauty and fun
- rest of year temps between 50-80 degrees
- rain 3-4 days a week between midnight and 4am
- wind never above 15mph

Fantasy weather tax: Piglet has her feathers back. She is turning pink in the face. Yesterday she looked in a nest box. This is timely as I am nearly out of eggs.
