Oh good. They have come back in and are spreading bedding around. I can go out and close the pop door so it doesn’t get too cold overnight.
Only one more night of this and then back to normally cold temperatures!

Mine go back inside much sooner than they do when temps are warmer. The really cold days, they come out in the morning (coldest time of day 🤷‍♀️), then retreat inside. Whether they stay inside or head back out depends upon how the day goes. Checking out the day through the windows simply isn't good enough.

Snow update, more than 1 Fenix deep. With tonight's accumulation it may even get 2 Fenixs deep. 20250122_195014.jpg

A request for an opinion poll on Silver vs Gold Wyandotte hens:

In many yrs past I've asked Wyandotte owners their honest objective (not subjective) opinion of the assertive or aggressive or bully, or top pecking order status of Wyans in their backyard flocks. In the past owners gave a 50/50 pro/con opinion on them as flockmates ~ compared to Leghorns or Barred Rocks which got much higher pros as being more friendly peaceable flockmates.

I know flock mixes are different by owners but past owner inputs placed Wyans at the top of pecking status not good to mix w/gentler breeds. Any experiences w/yours? Silver or Gold variety?
Silver, Colombia wyandotte, was queen. Whether due to breed or age (older than the others) I don't know.

Jessica, Golden Wyandotte, was same age as Nellie (Brown Leghorn), Blanche and PITA (White Sapphires = Leghorn cross). All 3 of Leghorn blood were above her (would contribute to her nest when broody).

Hyacinth and Violet (Silver Laced Wyandottes) are close to the bottom. They're also part of the youngest group. Jane (Rhode Island Red) is also close to the bottom, while Kate (also RIR) is at/near the top of her age group. The whole age group is at the bottom.

Storm, BLRW x Olive Egger (Cuckoo Marans x Legbar) rose above Pear and Cheetah's age group (includes Nellie and Co.) to become queen upon Silver's passing. She was brooding chicks at the time, and continued to raise them.

Enigma (Gold Penciled Hamburg x Colombian wyandotte) and Chia (GPH x Golden Wyandotte) are fairly low in order. Their age group is

:frow Hi Ijak!

The air stunk for several days wafting smoke toward our valley. Western horizon still looks dirty even now. DH & I had sinus problems from the smoke but it's more worrisome to us how it affects little 2-lb Silkies. They are resilient little birds but still not something we want them to weather :(.
So sorry that you have to go through all that bad air quality. I know it's awful- back in July 2024 there was the awful Borel Fire that sent smoke my way and blotted out the sun completely at times. Ash fell like light snow into our eyes and nose... it's a wonder i didn't take any pics!
Hope those wildfires get doused in the rain that is supposed to come Sunday.
