My coop is designed for hot weather. It’s drafty if it’s windy. The girls don’t want to come in the house to get dry. I’m not the rooster guy, Mr Wyandottey is their rooster.
If you think there's a particularly drafty spot, screw in a thick cardboard over the spot inside, then remove it in summer.

If they feel really cold they will keep moving to find a comfortable spot & snuggle for warmth ~ you have a lot of birds to keep each other warm. My understanding is moist air is more problematic in a coop than cold temps.

When it's windy daytime here all our 6 birds come to the garage/house corner where there's no draft & huddle near each other. Nighttime they huddle in the coop. Summertime they spread out more.

Garage/house corner where the chickens found the best place to be whether it's rainy or windy. The Silkies will go inside the coop if we get the bad Santa Ana Winds like the winds that fueled the L.A. fires earlier this year.

It's cool to work w/ these smaller family farm breeders but it's been my experience that there is sometimes a wait to get the order filled & does cost more than production hatchery chicks. I waited 9 months for my Buckaboo Farm three DNA-sexed Silkie order to be filled to my specifications. & I found a breeder w/i driving distance so I could pickup my order. At $85 per chick I was not risking shipping.
Yes, the wait can indeed be long especially for show quality birds or rare breeds or even really pretty egg colors. I am on a waitlist for the SFH’s I just HAD to have 😂

I can imagine it’s even crazier if you’re showing or trying to get breeding stock for sale/show.

So far, I have learned that I have one very talkative chick. Will have to think of a special name for this one. Chicken Little? She doesn't seem to be afraid, but she sure is the town crier. When I go in to see if something is wrong, the other two are just hanging out, or laying around. All seems calm, except her. 😁

I'll never be that advanced in chicken tending. Only been into it for 9 years, and no idea how many more I have.

We keep it pretty simple here. I just love my big docile girls, mostly BO's, Australorps, LO's, and a few mixes. Cannot again leave out my Leghorns, of which I only have one left. But she does seem healthy enough at the moment.

I’m worried about the two golden girls. They got wet standing in the rain. They were chased back into the coop by me. But they are soaked. There is no heat in the coop. Just the A/C for summer. It’s going to drop down to 45f tonight. Should I be concerned? 🤔 :idunno

Ok now I can trim their topknots so they can see 😊♥️
Oh yes, Holly is most definitely a pullet. I'm still undecided on Jolly, they could still go either way. The good thing, nothing is screaming cockerel yet.

His tail really is just spectacular :love
Chick Flick.

Picked up 3 Australorps today. Just a day old, so will keep in the house for a couple days and then out to the coop brooder.
Awlll, congrats they are adorable! The little soft cheeps really are precious.

Me either, the only way I would ever fuss with showing would be for a 4H project with my kids and that would just be at the local fair. I live in Ohio though maybe one year I should go the Ohio National’s but not to show just to take photos for everyone here! It’s up in Columbus just a couple of hrs away. But… could I make it out of there without buying any … doubtful 🤨

As for breeding, I really just want to maintain my own little flock unless someone I know wants some chicks or hatching eggs.

I would say as long as they are not wet to the skin they should be fine.

Their feathers are hard feathers so should shed water better then the silly silkies.

Jolly was tidbitting yesterday morning, all excited over some grain I dumped from Truly’s bucket.

😞
