Can’t show you mine - but it is effective! We call them rabbit slips….

I will have to wrap the trees I guess from now on. If it ever warms up and stops raining I need to do an inventory of the trees. There is a Paw Paw I need to move also. I dread moving it as I have heard they are finicky with being disturbed.

I took a peek at it this afternoon when I had to trudge all the way to the end of the paddock to chase the velociraptors back to the barn. They sure can run fast the beasts!

It would be highly unlikely, if even possible, for Nacho to have laid all those eggs. She is just the one who went broody and sat on them. They will not all look like her at all. I don't think this would even occur to the neighbor. How would he even know she was the one who sat on them?

It'll be obvious when she walks around the yard w/ chicks following her that they were hatched by her...

Everyone say hello to 2 new members of the FBA community!

The breeder let us know their were day-olds available last night at 8 pm. I spoke to them this morning at 8:30. The place was 90 minutes away by car. When we got there there were 5 left. These two appear to be pullets, fingers crossed. They are Polish barnyard mixes. I have no idea what they will look like when they grow up.

They have applied themselves to trying to jump up on the top of their heater.

Everyone say hello to little Nimue. The first to make it to the top.

My vote is for the one w/ heavy black eyeliner & black dot on the top beak to be a girl... Don't get them mixed up...I love guessing games to see what they become .

Left side 1 up from bottom: a mottled pullet. Looks like they have an Ayam ceyami hen and 2 white crested roos, 1 blue and 1 black....

Going to play with kippenjungle again.....

Hmmmm.....going to have to play with it on the computer.

Ok. Kippenjungle wasn't helpful as white crested simply isn't an option. Ok....go do some quicky research on what the genetic breakdown of a white crested black polish (the blue roo is easy as that's the BBS we've discussed so much in the past). Here's where it gets interesting.

White crested black is actually a VARIATION of mottled. There's a Japanese study about it.

Ok....lemme go look at WCB Polish chicks......they look JUST like what you have with 1 teensy tiny exception.

The black "exclamation mark" front and center of the crest. THAT is classic pure mottled.

That "exclamation" is more readily visible on the Houdans, but there's a tiny little spot on the EL and MA, also. Being as the WcB are a variation of mottled (I'm still wrapping my head around that one....didn't Phyllis have a stray white feather?) It makes perfect sense for your little darlings to be mottled (especially with the presence of at least 1 mottled mama). Whether one or both will turn out to be BLUE mottled or Black remains to be seen. Either way, the roo will be clear.

Also, they will initially feather out with colors matching current down color placement (possibly blue where the black is). The mottled effect should start with the 9-12 week moult.
