Greenfire's original SFHs didn't have crests. SFHs must be landrace chickens, i.e., like Hedemoras that come in different colors & some w/Silkie type fur while others have regular feathers.
They are a landrace breed. You are correct the first import didn’t have crests. The lady GF got them from originally didn’t like the crests so she had selected only non-crested to breed. However, GF brought in a second import group and these had both the crested and non crested varieties. So now the US has both and they are interbred to increase genetic diversity. My flock should be about 50/50.

Idk if you or anyone else is interested but this thread documents GF bringing this breed here. I found it fascinating.

I will take a pic tomorrow, but tonight I noticed that Muffy was limping. She had a callus on the bottom of her foot that was coming loose. Her foot was also puffy/swollen.

She had 1/2 an aspirin and I was able to remove the callus which had a kernel embedded in the foot like a corn on our feet. I cleaned that up, put a bandage on the foot and I will reassess in the morning.

So I will take a photo of the callus and kernel so we ne can get an idea of how this was embedded in the foot. I also debrided some excess tissue from the wound - fresh edges will encourage healing faster. Now if she will only keep that bandage on her foot - she has been picking at it already.

Thanks Bob. I have been plagued by them since winter start. Been told either stress or a vitamin issue. Been taking vitamins so guess it’s stress!

That’s why I need to sit on my lawn chair watching the chooks 😊♥️
You need more iron in your body.

Also folic acid, B-6, B-12, Zinc. The "B" vitamins are the easiest to destroy in cooking so fresh food sources or supplements of these vitamins is needed.

As for stress...let me know if there's a cure for that!

I do like the look of the crested, but the single comb are gorgeous too ❣️
