It was a lovely day today, got to +24C my farrier was out to trim feet, we talked chickens (she misses have her own flock, but with her husband raising broilers she is not permitted to have her own flock off backyard chooks), and then chatted horses, and of course discussed her new baby who is adorable! It was a lovely visit on a lovely day.

The chooks had to stay in the Rooster Run to keep them out of the way, the grass in there is knee deep, I’ll have to mow some of it tomorrow. But the chooks enjoyed playing jungle raptor for a bit out there.

Pepper-Larry was browsing the seed heads on the grass, love how their third eyelid come into play to protect their eyes.View attachment 4137214

I am very worried about Sweetie, she is not acting normal, and feels cold, and looks pale. Not sure what’s going on there.

I should explain I had to come home from work to wrangle chooks this morning, I neglected to lock the back barn door and one of the horses must have pushed it open (Reenie no doubt), once I kicked horses out and dragged chooks back in I noted Sweetie was laying on the ground not getting up and moving around.

As I had to get back to work, I gave her some antibiotics, and half an aspirin at 11:30am. Then I put her in with Mr P so she could be under the Sweeter Heater if she wanted to warm up.

She was still not normal when I got home, still pale and cool. I don’t know if she got injured with the horses or if she is brewing some illness. She received some Tylenol around 6:30pm; when I head out in a bit I’ll give her more antibiotics.

These chooks are as much worry as the horses. 😞
Oh no! I hope it's not something serious and she perks up over night.

The outdoor porch light is on 24/7 ~ it's never turned off & the coop has two windows that gets the light into it! It's worked great for 14 yrs & now we got two that would rather stay out ~ one wants to chase crickets after dark & the other looks for a place to roost outside waiting for the other who keeps foraging. Any more ideas :lau ?

When it was cold & no crickets it was fine but now with crickets coming out at night its too much fun to go roost at dusk! We're going to have to herd the stragglers now.

The stragglers:

The light needs to be inside the coop. It will draw them in. Once they are roosted, you turn it off.
