It appears that PITA is living up to her name. Came home from work. PITA is back on the same nest as yesterday (she came off this morning (7 eggs) and Cardhu is AWOL......eggs coldish....disposed of the unmarked eggs and started looking around....she moved into the upper middle nest box.

Went back to the house to get leather gloves (she's never been willing to allow touch, let alone more). On way to house, thoughts: Going to drag her back out to HER spot.

On way back with gloves: PITA likely had a fit and wouldn't let her march past PITA'S spot....this is going to be a continuing issue if she's truly broody (leghorn lines, broody?! ). Hmmmm, try to candle eggs, return them to Cardhu instead...

Broad daylight and I'm attempting candling inside the coop with my phone flashlight....close the big door for a little light reduction. Ok. Green egg....can't see squat. Brown egg....transparent (dunno what it should look like at 1 week). Light brown/dark cream egg....semi-opaque....can't tell if there's ANY movement or if too cold. Ok, fine! Cardhu is getting those eggs in addition to whatever she's sitting on. She can sort it out.

Don gloves, flip curtain back. Here, girl are YOUR eggs, away from PITA. Yup, she tried to bite. 2nd pair next to her rather than directly in front. Easier, but no room. 3rd pair to the front. She tried to bite again. I flinched, 1 egg broke. It joined the disposed of eggs. Next pair: no bite attempts, head pulled way back, I swear eyes were the size of saucers: WFT ARE YOU DOING GIVING ME ALL THOSE EGGS?! Last egg deposited in front of her, curtain flipped down. Will check later to see what she does. If they're kicked out, will dispose.

Before leaving coop, take advantage of the leather gloves to see about PITA. Nudge, nudge, semi slide hand under her. Like trying to rock a statue. She's in trance mode. No attempts at biting. Do I actually have a broody leghorn? If that keeps her out of the way of other broodies, She's been determined that OTHERS will raise HER babies from the beginning. Did she decide "if you want something done right, you better do it yourself!"? Only time will tell.

Periwinkle is very impressed with all of these beards and muffs! "I have a lot of growing to do!"

Sky is crazy here too, smoke from the wildfires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba - it’s a bad scene there, been very hot and very dry.

My asthma and allergies are crazy, even the chooks are sneezing. Except Clyde! He for once is good with his breathing.

My Roos call to my neighbour’s Roo also. Silly boys!

Meanwhile trying to lift Georgie is like trying to lift jello. I swear if she goes broody again I’ll scream! At least she came out of the nest box on her own today. Hope that means she is getting over her broody episode.

And Holly has squatted today, so I guess I’ll see eggs from her soon.

It’s only mayhem here today, nothing unusual. The chooks must be crazy. None to be found anywhere, until I go out and sit on the porch. Then the porch looks like Detroit transit! Chooks coming out of the woodwork!

Madam Blanche has asked me to scribe:

“Good Sir and wise Queen, you are indeed correct, whilst Misty has a lovely beard and muffs they are not very vibrant, a bit too subtle to really stand out; please inform HRH that her beard and muffs are indeed glorious.

But I also wish to inform both her, and Misty, that only I, Madam Blanche Golden Girl, has the most glorious of all beards and muffs, but not being a vain old lady I would not have put it forth, except for the fact that in my old age I feel it my duty to ensure credit is given where credit is due.

No disrespect meant to our glorious liege HRH Queen Aurora”.

Blanche is an old lady I should point out, and quite intent on making sure I a mere Hooman submitted her statement.

How odd. Aurora does admit that Blanche had some impressive muffs she does believe that Blanche does not have a beard but rather has an overgrown goatee. Hence she cannot rank in the same class as the classically adorned Queen.

Aurora says, "well done" but you cannot compare to her magnificent classic beard and muffs.

Went to tuck everyone in, and see decoy eggs rolled under the roost bars in the coop most of them use. Cute.
Two of the marans were in nest boxes, chattering to each other when I lifted the lid.
The pullets keep moving the eggs around, it's very cute. They're getting used to how it works!

What a measured response. Perhaps she is extending some grace to the aged lady? I know my grandmother says some out-of-pocket stuff sometimes but with age comes the right to be unfiltered.

We did lose a decoy egg for a few hours, but it was returned eventually. I think someone tucked it under their wing and took it for a walk. When Morinth was broody she would do that to bring them to her nest...
