I seem to recall @Royal Chick saying B12 and Vit E.

Found this online:

Wry neck can be a symptom of a Vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency.

Chicks can be more prone to a Vitamin B1 deficiency if they are fed medicated chick feed for too long. The coccidiostat Amprolium in medicated chick feed can inhibit the absorption and utilization of Vitamin B1.

Chicks can also be more prone to dietary deficiencies if their parents’ diet was deficient in vitamins as well”

Vitamin E for wry neck. B complex for many other neurological issues.
Or so I gathered when I was researching it.

Yes, thank you this matches what I found, I have been reading everything I can find on it. It’s a symptom vs a condition. They are not nor have they ever been on medicated feed, I didn’t see that as a cause, good catch!

Causes of this symptom I found: Vitamin deficiency, injury, poisoning/toxic plant/food or it can be a precursor to illness like Mercks or AI ect. To me it seems like it really could be anything that stresses their systems.

I feel like I can rule out Vitamin deficiency (unless she has some metabolic abnormality that isn’t allowing her to absorb one of those vitamins.) I have feed all of my birds the same things and she is the only one showing any signs of this.

Illness - I have been biting my nails for the last 48 hrs checking them every 4 hrs for the slightest sneeze and nothing thank goodness, absolutely nothing. Still monitoring closely we are at 48 hrs with nothing.

Toxic plant/food - possible but again they all eat the same foods including the new BSF Larvae I got.

Injury- This seems most likely. I am not out there 24/7 and they are dare devil teens.

Treatment seems to be Poultry cell or Rooster Booster in water for a few weeks and/or Black oil sunflower seeds. I am doing both. This seems to be working, she is improving either because of the supplement or the possible injury I can’t see is healing.

Mainly I am just puzzled as to how this happened to prevent it going forward. I am also going to throw away 40 dollars worth of BSF because omg what if there is a toxin in there???
Every individual has a different metabolism. Don’t think you can rule out vitamin deficiency just because she is the only one.
Bernadette was the only chick that was vitamin B deficient that made her lose the use of her leg.

Angry Aurora

There was a crazy ruckus in the yard the other day and I could not figure out why at first. Then I decided to shoot video of my investigation.

Yes, Aurora was mad that the 2 best nest boxes were taken. She was yelling at the injustice of it all and Sydney and Aster were joining in.

I did nothing. Aurora finally accepted her fate.

Ha! Love that photo. They are so silly about nest boxes and roosts. I think you’re right, we just have let them be who/what they are.

True, and a very good point. My logic is flawed there then. I am treating all of them as if it is a deficiency. I guess I may never know why for sure.

I will continue on that course of treatment then and keep an eye out for any signs of illness in her or the flock.

Thank you ☺️

You, only a scribe hooman dare enter the Palace of her majesty The Queen? And even filmed the the experience? Geez Bob, you are braver than I thought.

Update: my Coco has been harassed by the rooster, ever since I took her back outside. I’m in the house with her now, licking her wounds with a blue cote healing ointment. She’s gonna be with me tonight to let her rest and heal. I’m leaving early flying out, but she’ll be fine in the yard by herself tomorrow until my return.
If she was my Leghorn The Beetov-Hen I could have given her a list of chores I needed to get done.

If it is an injury then some anti inflammatory meds will aid in reducing muscle spasms - do you have Meloxicam? Or low dose aspirin? I don’t have Meloxicam but I do use low dose aspirin- 1/2 a tablet twice a day.

Mug for Monday

Color of this rooster: something with spots aka pretty but confusing 🤣

I don’t but I do have aspirin. I think I will try that tomorrow if she hasn’t straightened out (literally) by then. That may give me some answers, if she improves rapidly and more importantly help with any pain it could be causing her.
