Oh great Queen let me jump in here for a moment before you go on the attack.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with beards. Beards are great and much desired in chickens.

It is when you combine those lovely sought after beards with the crests of your "Not a real chickens" that the cause problems. Think Silkies and Polish.

Let's use this little lady as a example.
DSCN4216.JPG

She has truly a awesome beard and one heck of a crest. Together though they do impair her vision when free ranging. It leaves me with 2 choices with these special "not real chickens". I can either give them a haircut and have them looking like "Church" from Pet Cemetery after he came back from the dead, or keep them confined for their own safety and enjoy their awesomeness. For many other reasons I have decided that the silkies just can no longer free range safely as they become the first target for stray dogs, hawks and other predators so they get to keep their beards and crests and I add all kinds of enrichment into their coop to keep them happy. And I can say, they are happy in their coop. So much so that a month ago I ended up with 5 of the 7 girls broody all at once trying to pile into a single nest box.

I have been doing that also - the chooks are looking at me like I am an idiot. Come on kiddos show me your wattles 🤭

Dorothy's comb is a modified Pea comb. She's not PPrr. She's Pprr. Surprisingly, it actually shows a slight difference between the 2 genetic variants. (Rose combs don't show the difference)

I imagine it’s something to do with Mr P’s V comb. Funnily enough none of his offspring have that shape. Just weird funky ones.
