Good night fluffy butt people 😘 😴

Here is Betty, she has a spikey crown for a comb

That looks like a mulberry rose comb....like she got the R and not the P....still, crossed with a V-comb, all sorts of unusual can (and does) happen.

@RebeccaBoyd Papa George is 100% unique and I'm rather curious about how his offspring develop (more than just comb).

Probably most likely. I talked w/ a Breda Fowl owner yrs ago who got some Le Fleche birds to crossbreed w/their Breda to infuse hardiness into them but that breeder is no longer available to contact.

Wish there was better documentation on old breeds.

Supposedly, the Pilgrim Dominiques and Breda (Guelders) were mentioned as Colonial chickens but there's no reliable historical documentation of what the Colonial Breda looked like. The Dominiques were a preferred Pilgrim breed for their multi-purpose use as broodies, egg production, meat, & very soft non-odorous feathers for bedding/pillows/mattresses. So the Breda faded from Colonial preference.

The Dutch formulated the current Breda Fowl cuz it was originated near the town of Breda but who knows if it is now anything like the Pilgrim Breda mentioned in old documents? There is one portrait painting showing a Breda but who knows going farther back what Breda looked like?

A close-up of the supposed Breda rooster in the above painting (Breda then were known as Guelders.) It's a stretch in my mind that this roo looks anything at all like the present Breda.

La Fleche are also v-combed. And zooming in on the close up, the roo's comb actually looks like a rose comb that's been split lengthwise from the crown toward the beak. V-combs can manifest that way. So the modern Breda could very easily sport the nostrils and no comb from concerted breeding of specific types given the time lapse from the painting.

Thanks for sharing that painting. It's really cool.

Market went well this morning, other than a lady buying hens to butcher and shoving them into bags. :(

This guy was so handsome but mean as heck. Apparently he beat up the other roosters, the people, the hens, etc. They still wanted 10$ for him though 🙄

Look at my CochinXamericanas! Cochicanas? Anyways they're cute and sweet and everyone got bowls of frozen veggies floating in water. These babies were terrified of it.

3 eggies today! And 1 blue-green softie that Posy was eating when I checked in the short brown coop. I do not know the second tan layer yet.

Now onto combs, wattles, and crests.

Periwinkle has the classic combo

Nosy Posy has a V-fork with normal crest, and no wattles

An older pic but you can see it is 2 straight combs

Marble has a lopsided V comb (I think it was bitten or ripped off on one side) and no wattles. He also has a full beard.

I narrowly avoided leaving with quail...

I'm not getting quail...not even going to try their (apparently) delicious eggs........
Also saw guinea pigs, pigeons, and white guinea fowl. And the jack russel pupper is just a love bug.

Rue update:

First, the rest of flock remains perfectly healthy. If it is Mareks, it must be one of the milder mutations. The Silkies, I read are particularly susceptible to it and they are to date happy and healthy. Mostly, I am ruling this out but it is still possible.

She has been on Vit E 400mg & B complex 2 drops and 3 crushed sunflower seeds & egg for selenium per day.

Yesterday, she seemed the same as in the video so I took her out to be with the flock for an hr. After this she was worse. Lots of wing balancing, super unsteady. I did learn something from this though. Exercise makes it worse. So, I am back to thinking it is an injury, I can’t see. She is particularly sensitive to me touching her back.

I am gonna continue with the vitamins to support, no more trips outside, just rest for now. I also started her back on the aspirin today. I will bring the silkies in at night if she improves tomorrow.

Still eating, drinking, and pooping normal.

Happy flock photos
