Hattie Update

Its supposed to reach 100°F (37.8C) today.

Hattie is doing pretty well in the big run with the Phyllistines.

I have placed the old canopy over the main coop to try and shade it. I need to get the birch tree cut down and replaced. That coop needs shade.

Aster has to explore what was going on.

At least the chickens are active during this heat wave, so I know they're not dying of heat exhaustion... Having to refill their water every few hours because it gets hot isn't fun. They're sticking to the shade of the edge of the woods. I sprayed down a big patch of ferns for them to lay in and cool off if they need to. Poor Esme wants to lay an egg but it's sweltering in their coop and she's panting like a dog! It's about 10⁰ cooler in the shade and there's a nice breeze, at least.

But my lord, enough!

Here is the latest reading from my coop thermometer.
It is the 81% humidity that is killing me.

We forget vets are only people like us & not perfect gods... although it seems like they are when I need mine for a sick bird. We lucked out that our vet grew up around chickens.

This is true.

For almost 50 yrs I have dealt with my horse vets. But never have they ever made me feel bad.

But yes they are only human and have feelings like all of us.

Get a box and put it in the shade for her to lay her egg in.

I do love Nosy Posys colors. He's a sweet boy.

Big ol Breezy though, I'm hoping he stays well behaved. He does smoosh the silkie cross hens when he mates them though...

She's like a quarter his size!
That's why most people have bantams & regular breeds separated. In our situation we have no roos so size doesn't matter ~ flock temperament is more important for our tribe.

How many lbs will Breezy weigh?
