Dr appointments for both me and Rosie this morning. Rosie has to see a ENT, tonsils and adenoids have to come out. She already has another double ear infection once again. He is sending me to a orthopedic surgeon. Finally got a MRI on my shoulder and there is a tear. Bad enough that he is skipping physical therapy and heading straight for surgery.

No surgery is ever fun but tears don't reconnect naturally like a broken bone so you'll be glad in the long run that you did it. Glad I got arm surgery done & my beautician had surgery on her arm to reconnect her ligament & while at it they cleaned up the calcium deposits in that shoulder. So sorry you & Rosie got all this medical stuff going on. This must be the year of tonsillectomies & arm surgeries on this thread!

She eats watermelon chunks? My chooks prefer whole slices with the outside skin on. Or I will cut bowls from each side

More on Hattie

There is a thunderstorm passing east of us. While we are not getting the full relief a storm would offer, we are getting cooler breezes from it. It is helping some.

Hattie is grooming. I consider that a good sign.

First thing this morning, I found her up on the waffled steel chair. Which early in the morning is cool and provide a lot of air flow. Smart lady.

Okay everyone, so after some consideration, her name is now Hawk. I went from Blondie to Shakira, but my mother was telling me that her face looked like a hawk and it hit me that the black one we have is called Raven and I figured it would make sense if we called this brown one by a type of bird. So Hawk and Raven. Two types of birds.

Just like By Bob's Hattie, this is just me again since I'm sensitive about chickens & heatstroke, I would keep Breezy like Hattie in-house. Heavy birds, older birds, laying birds, are heatstroke targets. If that's impossible, then lots of tarp or shade w/slow running water in the run to stand in. Our Leghorns liked to stand in the drinking bowl so we got the idea to start using slow running pooled water. Or a shallow pan w/ room for bird to stand in water & a frozen gallon or quart bottle in the pan to keep it cool. A mess? Muddy chickens! You bet! But I like it better than a heatstroke.

Our slow sprinkler running in shade on 100F days. Muddy? Messy? Yes but it saves them...

The big issue here is the humidity levels - heat is one thing, but when it’s humid it extremely difficult to evaporate moisture to ‘cool down’.

I use fans to help move air, and try to keep them inside as much as possible where it’s a bit cooler. I do put water on the ground to create puddles and that does turn to mud. They like to dig in that. But the big thing I find they like are the brick pavers in the barn. They will lay on those pavers where it’s cool.

Humidity is the big issue. It’s 20C (68f) but my humidity is at 79% it’s very clammy out there, perfect mosquito weather! The H

We've caught dozens of rats this past yr! Animal feed, gardens, & fruit trees are an attraction so we took action!
