Hattie may just be staying outta LF's way. Our youngest birds won't go near a treat if one of the older birds are eating out of our hand.
Possible, but absolutely not true. Lady Featherington is not permitted to eat until Hattie is done. She does not challenge Hattie. Hattie can warn her off with a word.

Those are such sweet videos. I love seeing chicks with their momma hens. You have a very nice assortment of color's on the little ones and I hope you have a pullet heavy group.
Thank you for all the info re: incubator. It was more useful by far than the instruction manual.

I'm hoping PITA comes off the nest before the kids arrive this afternoon so I can get some relatively calm video of all of them. I'm pretty sure I've caught all of hers at one point or another, but until I actually SEE them all at once, I'm not sure.

Focus, on the other hand, needs to stay put until tomorrow at the earliest. I'm pretty sure her quad are (through the damp feathers and the morning vid) 1 black (Cheetah grand), 1 blonde, and 2 silver (blue/lavender?).

I'm questioning my initial read on the light boys

are they actually lavender (Isabella ie BBS type lavender on a BBR)? Could some of the black chicks be split to lavender and a few be full lavender?

But the black tail feathers....hmmmm. this requires lots of observation.

They're minding her rather well. Coming when she calls them, not venturing far enough to stress her. Only time she's stressed is when she puffs up due to proximity of the curious adults.

The one I'm worried about stressing is PITA....with 12 and her smaller body size and older age (4). I am glad she's (so far) proven to be such an accommodating mother with the chicks jumping in with her. And with her being so calm when I chivvied babies back to her.

Focus is still a mostly unknown, so there's some worry there too. I'm glad she took the 4 so easily too, though.

Just unplugged the incubator. 21 babies should give us a 10 & 10 +/- 1 or 2 on the cockerel/pullet ratio....unless my keeping the eggs cooler before setting them weighted the scale in favor of more pullets....or the hens are like @RebeccaBoyd non-silkie ladies and throw nothing but males....

I would not worry at all with PITA. 4 is not that old and with her already being proven, 12 should be a breeze for her. I think with her age and life experience she could have the smarter chicks in the long run. Those older girls have seen things and pass that wisdom down. In her last year of life my ancient ole bat Momma sucessfully raised 2 broods of chicks. She was as mean as ever and those chicks were wicked smart.

I worry slightly with my first time mothers no matter the age. I have been fortunate and so thankful that every hen I have let hatch chicks have turned into great mothers.

It does. You need to take time off work so you can watch (and video) 24x7!

I'm glad the incubator worked for you. I have never saw that sort of water system with one. I am very behind on here and with little hopes of catching up. What was supposed to be part-time for myself has turned into full time. Long 10 sometimes 11 hour days and with the added heat I am exhausted when I get home of the evening. By the time I drag myself out to take care of the chickens and double check that Rosie and Dad are actually doing their jobs correctly of helping and gathering eggs, I immediately crash and do not even sit down at the computer. The last 3 weeks have been miserable with the added heat. Even on a slow day that heat sucks the life out of me. Both AC units have decided to cop-out last week and we have a work order in, but they still have not shown up to address it. Toss in the many Dr. appointments for myself and Rosie, I'm barely keeping my head above water it seems.

I am not complaining though, I love my job and my boss. I'm just tired and cranky.
