My experience - this is when an adult is 'greeting' young chickens/chicks. They gently lean down and look at the chick - indicating an 'introduction' and calm acceptance/greeting

Roosters will often do this with chicks being raised by a broody - to imprint on them and introduce themselves (sorry my words aren't the best at explaining - but this is a GOOD thing - Hazel is acknowledging and accepting them.)
Thats good news, then! I did think Hazel was pretty gentle with the underfoot chick, more like pecking in her direction, to get her to respect Hazel’s space. Because Hazel can really land one when she wants, beak-on-skull stuff.

I've noticed juniors grooming seniors (most recently with the chicks). Frequently seems to be immediately after a smack down....possibly as an apology? I haven't seen it consistently enough to say definitively, but I'm watching for it as I feel I'm missing some info on it.

Good morning GtC how have you been feeling? Tony is looking very lovely!
I want to say I've been feeling okay but not really to tell you the truth. I've been going through some health problems. I appreciate the compliment on Tony. Those feathers are quite lovely. How are you doing? How are your chickens?
It's A Party!

We celebrated Hattie’s Hatchday today.

Everyone enjoyed the party together.

Except Lady Featherington who would not come over. Don't worry, I took her a piece all her own.
Happy birthday, Hattie! The many times I remember Grandma eating cake is hilarious for some reason. You got to have a chicken enjoy some sugar at least once. I'm thinking to get Tony in the sweet spirit. I tried giving a cookie crumb to Hawk and she didn't seem interested. When I get the chance, I'll find a picture but I definitely have a video of Grandma eating Old Man's birthday cake.

Now tonight Reenie broke loose

And now at 3am I see they are playing musical stalls. Both have broke loose. And Reenie is in Truly’s stall.

I could just throttle these two 😡 this gives me more work to do fixing things. Sheesh!

And those door sitters have figured out how to get up on the door - Tippy, Mr LC and Buttercup.

Looks like you need stall nets instead of ropes. Possibly reinforced with stainless steel. :lau

I’m on a mission now. To catch that little roo that we saved from the alley. (Name: Chick-Fil-A) he’s bleeding again and can’t keep up with the other chooks. It’s a nasty open wound on his back. If I can’t catch him and take him to the vet he’s gonna die for sure. I was able to throw him a strip of steak. He ran away fast with his prize.
Did you ever manage to catch him? I really hope he is ok, poor little thing.

That Mulberry comb looks like a problem. Can a vet surgically trim the comb to keep the feathers from pushing into his eyes? W/ our Silkies it's a daily vigil to make sure there's no feathers in their eyes.
I won’t trim the comb, but will definitely be trimming feathers as needed. So far they don’t seem to be getting in his eye, they just block his vision a little on that side.

I was seriously thinking about selling silkie hatching eggs, or possibly even day old chicks. But am not sure if that comb means his genetics aren’t very good. Even before his comb started doing that I knew they would only be pet quality.

Thanks to everyone who commented on Orchid’s comb. I thought it might be a rose comb but that little nubbin at the top had me confused.

What are the genetics of you cross a Chocolate Orp and a Lavender Orp? I wonder what colors you get from that.

It’s a chilly 10C (50F) and will drop a couple more degrees next couple hrs. The fur and feathered creatures are appreciative of the cooler weather.

Have an awesome fluffy butt day everyone - this little one is broody the brat!
