The studs are mostly solid, but the rest of the wrap around needs replacing. I think it's almost as old as the house. And the wood is splintering. What I'd really like to do is get a shed (a bit larger) and tear down the existing coop....leave the foundation (look like railroad ties) and fill it with sand for a large outdoor dust bath area. I'd like to place the shed so it's half IN the hillside (like the house is) for the insulating/cooling properties of that. I've got a stinking hunch that it's going to be a DIY project for the hillside reason alone. And really should keep a close eye on the classifieds of various sorts for bricks to get that part started.
I love the half in the hillside idea. Excellent way to help control temps.

Well the Bigs Hazel, Diane and Annie have done a fair amount of Littles hunting today. Tedi had no interest. I couldn't let them all range together until mid-afternoon b/c of yet more appointments in town, so maybe they were storing it up. I'm not sure how much trouble the Littles might endure, or get themselves caught in some flaw in the netting so I wanted to supervise. It’s looking like mostly dominance assertion and teaching respect and not death hunting, definitely true with Hazel, but I'm not sure about Annie and Diane. At least two Littles have learned they need to move away when a Big approaches!

After a while in the Big's netted area the Littles found themselves driven toward the Bigs wire run and went exploring. Hazel beaked them out of a corner but otherwise it was peaceful. They liked the dark safety under the coop, and no Bigs bothered them there, and soon enough found the next-door dirt bath while the Bigs rested and preened in the shade outside the run.

Diane eventually came in to see what was going on and scattered them out of the bath. They further explored more of the run and found the other door out.

Group dynamics are always so interesting. Love your chicken space! 💗

Dreams of Air at 500m :love long distance trips without refueling. Maybe even getting to meet Marie in England face to face.
Hawaii trips would be easy. Continental United States coast to coast would be a breeze. Even Bob has an airport close by.
If you make that happen, need to see you up here, too.
