Red Silkie Chicks

Red Silkie Chicken - Ready in a Few Hours

I like this red colour, have never seen one around here that’s for sure!

Her spelling was unique so I kept calling her Uh-LEES in my mind (which I thought was a pretty pronunciation too). Sucks to lose a girl. I don't hurt so much if a hen has a long life but we lost too many that were under 3 yrs old ~ heatstroke, Mareks, illness, disabilities/handicaps, chick mortality. Every loss is a stab in the heart💔
Her age is a big factor in my sadness. She just turned a year old, she was in her prime. And she was so healthy and spry. She easily could have been here forever as far as I was concerned.

Oy vey... Well... Let's see if I can hold myself together.

About an hour ago Aliss fell asleep. Within minutes she was gone. I don't know what happened. She was doing so well today. I was about to give her a piece of my dinner and she was just lying there, her comb was starting to turn pale, she was still warm. She must have just passed. I held her and rocked her and kissed her over and over and cried. I had to bury her by myself, my dad is sleeping. I'm just stunned, and my heart is broken. I don't know what happened. I'm just glad she went in her sleep. I hope she wasn't in pain. And I'm happy her last day was good. I'm just so... More than sad. I don't know how else to put it, just heartbroken. I didn't expect it. I didn't think it would hit me so hard.
You've lost a family member of sorts, and a patient you were caring for. These are always very hard, extra hard. :hugs

I think nothing you did made her pass. You made her comfortable to have a good last day, and made her comfortable for her passing, which is a wonderful gift.

She may have had a slow bleed or numerous other internal injuries on top of the stress of the attack. You can't know exactly. Crush injuries are different in nature than a laceration or typical wound. They create a lot of dead tissue / waste product that is a heavy load for a body to deal with. I doubt anyone else would have treated her differently or had a different outcome.

Knowing this doesn't make your loss any less, but it may help you to deal with the inevitable irrational feelings and second-guessing that everyone goes through, a sort of survivors guilt.

She was able to be with her friends, and sunbathe on the grass, and go to sleep peacefully. No one could ask for more. :hugs :hugs :hugs

Never did make it to get some planter pots. I did manage to haul my bike out of the shed, and fill up the flat tires. And make a note that I need two new tires on that bike.

Then I went to bring the chickens in the barn; while checking the paddock for any stragglers there was this huge bang! It set the horses off and the chickens, I ran up to the house to see what the noise was, my mum said the noise made her jump! She was on the back deck sitting.

I went to see if my neighbours were ok… all seemed good.

Then I went to get the bike. Well I guess those crappy tires really do need to be replaced! The rear tire had blow-out and that was the bang. Just glad I wasn’t riding the sucker when that happened 😆😆😆

I’ll have to walk over there tomorrow.

Awwww they are getting to be little ladies now 😊

Dig dig dig, dust bath, dig dig, dust…. Run run run…. Squawk! Oops did mama tromp on you? 🥰
It’s true. In the last week they have transformed from being big chicks into being miniature chickens.
Cookie has both boots (white) and pantaloons (black). I am surprised she can get around with all those feathers on her legs!
