30 August to 6 September

Link to last week's synopsis

All our thoughts go out to @TOMTE who lost her dear flock leader Aliss, and to @TX Chick Noob for the loss of young silkie Snowball 🕊️.

We welcomed this week @haroldnkit , who shared some lovely photos and story of their chickens.

Did you know about "Satins" ? Interesting facts from our feather duster experts :

@bgmathteach

Worries for her girl Apache, that sleeps outdoor in an unknown location ( and some useful advice on hay keeping !)

--------------------------------------------------

@ChicoryBlue

A "buckeye fascinator" 😂
The flock has gotten used to confinement with a set-up that still allows them chicken behaviour.

---------------------------------------------------

@drstratton

Showed their wonderful and convenient chicken setup.
A fun chicken in a truck picture ! 😂
And some more fun pictures.

---------------------------------------------------

@featherhead007

Giz is turning into a real eye catcher. In fact the whole gang is such eye candy we may forgive Alex for his awful jokes ?

--------------------------------------------------

@Grandma The Chicken

When the cat's away, the chicken will play.

--------------------------------------------------

@Ikslo

New layers find interesting places to lay. What about this surprise : tan egg from a buff lady ?

--------------------------------------------------

@knoturavggrl

Integration process begins for the Littles.
Tuefers and a "reluctant auntie" !

---------------------------------------------------

@Ponypoor

The Noirans are three weeks old - cute video.
Update on the Silkie babies. Fun video : they are already turning into beetle hunters !
The noirans have learned to roost.

---------------------------------------------------

@RebeccaBoyd

Her three boys, Bosa, Davy, and "Q.", have all become quite friendly.
Confinement for the flock : how it's going, and consequences for the future.
What happens when one little chick has so many mammas ?

----------------------------------------------------

@RoyalChick

A bunch of lovely baby mugs
Nothing is better than a family sunbathing session.
RC worries that Chippy could be a he, but several FBA members tell her to relax ; there are no conclusive signs, especially for a speckled suspect.
Let the roosting adventure begin !

--------------------------------------------------

@rural mouse

Some lovely mugs.
A very graceful treehugger..who has decided she prefers sleeping outside, and hides very well. But everything has an end !

---------------------------------------------------

@SimpleJenn

Someone there has a case of severe chick math 😁 ! And look at those gorgeous parents.

--------------------------------------------------

@Sylvester017

Safety is an essential issue for chickens : an 8 feet high backyard concrete wall did not stop a coyote.
Some crazy things people do with their Silkie. They are real chickens remember?!
A past experience with avian leukosis in chicks of a rare breed, and a reminder that a longer quarantine can save a flock.

-------------------------------------------------

@TX Chick Noob

Saying Goodbye to Snowball.

-------------------------------------------------

@TOMTE

Shared the sad news of Aliss passing. It feels different without her, both for the flock and their human.

Thanks @ManueB much appreciated!

Have a lovely evening!

NOTE: Always quarantine incoming birds or chicks before introducing to your established flock. Some say up to 2 weeks... we would do more than that... 6 to 8 weeks.

It was our long quarantine time that saved us from introducing AL infected chicks into our flock cuz the breeder got back to us w/ necropsy results from her dying juveniles in time to inform us that our two chicks from her had AL.

We had lost one juvenile chick the 1st week we received her & informed the breeder it died suddenly. The remaining pullet we kept quarantined till the breeder got back to us about her necropsy lab results. We finished raising the last chick away from the flock till she died a month later.

Oh how sad! Glad you kept her away though.

Kids are Up to No Good

The girls have been up to mischief recently.

You didn't really want those petunias did you? They did leave the dandelion though.

This is how they eat an apple. I expect that Mrs BY Bob will be peeling the apples for them soon.

That’s hilarious!

Ok not the geraniums - but the apple! And the dandelion!

But, but dad, we were just trying to weed for you. Peeled apples... yes please! 🤣

If you do use the stall for hay, given that it has flooded, and that I suspect weather will get worse not better over time (in general), I would encourage you to build a double pallet floor before putting hay in there. That would give you an extra 7-8" of lift off the floor should there be some flooding before the hay would get wet (you wouldn't want it to even get close, as the dampness would ruin it alone - but this would again, give some lift AND would allow good air circulation under it so no moisture build-up from the ground to ruin the bottom bales.). Just my humble opinion.....hay would get ruined if it got just damp. Hopefully it would be an unnecessary measure - but my motto is 'better safe than sorry'

I have one of those. Apache, my Exchequer Leghorn, disappears at night - (sometimes she roosts in the pine - maybe once every 3 or 4 evenings - so I can put her in the coop). I can not for the life of me figure out where she is hiding! I have looked all over for her...and in the morning, if it is even a hint of dawn, she is in the run just walking about with a 'what, what is the matter, mom, I'm here' look. So, I can not catch her leaving at night, nor coming int eh morning. And, given that I have 2 HUGE pine trees in the run, there is really no way to close off the top so she can't escape. :th :th :th I am so afraid that one morning I cam going to come out to find white with black speckled feathers strewn about!😟😟😟

and, she is NOT cuddly by any means - a no-touch chicken...but she is such an imp and has a great personality - I would just so miss her.....
That leghorn personality. They are their own birds.
