I figured it would be a mystery. Some of her feathers were a little out of place which led me to think either predator or self-injury, but I think she's going to molt soon so her feathers have been a little rough anyway. I think it's still too early in the season for fruits to fall and ferment... In the end I'm just glad she's okay! I wish they would stop wandering so far but there's nothing I can do about that short of keeping them locked in the run, and I can't bring myself to do that to them before it's time to (late fall), because the run is too small.
We used a roll of plastic green fencing to make an area for our girls to forage while I kept them out of the yard where I was working. Of course they wanted ALL the space they were used to but I needed to shut them off temporarily from my work space. I think you've used this plastic fencing in your yard before? We've been working on our yard for 14 yrs & w/ chickens it's forever evolving as new needs come up.

Omlet chicken products has a nifty portable chicken fencing but it was more $$$ than we cared to spend for something temporary & probably not as durable as the sturdier cattle/deer fencing we finally invested in.

I haven't read ahead yet... but what kind of backwoods foliage is there to eat... she may have eaten something not necessarily poisonous but mildly toxic to chickens? There are plants that dont kill but can cause illness or discomfort. Hope as I read forward that Esme is still doing ok...
There's some potentially toxic/poisonous plants around but I've never seen them eat any of them aside from a little taste test. Burning bush, lilies, pokeweed, lily of the valley, Asian bush honeysuckle, milkweed... It's definitely possible she ingested enough of something to get a little sick for a few hours.

Don't forget tax.
There are lots of other threads where you can talk about fish & chips and condiments without being off topic.
Here's an old photo of Agathae. Several of mine are moulting and they are charging interest for photos. Josephine wants to eat me, and Gaby wants nothing to do with anyone. Felicitas is whining about the nesting boxes because Josey is bullying her. Agathae is moulting too, but she seems chill about it. And Dominica is still eating her food, acting like normal, and silently moulting. She even lets me inspect her.
