My Princess passed away last night. She was fine yesterday but was found dead this morning.
It's believed she had a heart attack. Crying![]()

W/ chickens there's no end to keeping the grounds trimmed... trim trim trim around that fence but keep it installed... JMO again... after seeing the wildlife we get in just our suburb (not rural) yard... coyote, raccoon, possum, hawks, squirrels, fox, rats, cats, stray dogs... there's even more chance of these predators in rural locations!Yes. Am in no rush on that, particularly after all the effort I put in this growing season to stop weeds shorting out the fence!
Will keep playing with it. Thank you. Gives me a direction to go in.On mine you can edit the pic and choose when in that couple of seconds to have as the pic.
Don't know about any other chickens but our Dana is DEFINITELY a beak wiper on my shoes... yuck when it's yogurt or blueberry juiceI thought when they scraped their beaks on my shoe they were just wiping them to clean it, or sharpening it!
What are the semi-partridge birds next to them?
I love this photo
Sorry to hear this - have my fingers crossed.Beaky, our one-eyed cross beak cockerel, wandered off yesterday and unfortunately did not find his way back (per the one-eyed and probably deaf on that side thing). We are assuming at this point he was predated by a coyote. Does kind of redo our male to female ratio in a positive direction, but damn. He was boyfriend’s favorite and if we didn’t keep him, well he was quite thick and would have made a wonderful dinner. RIP Beaky
(I guess there is a chance he could come wandering back, but not likely.)

Hard to get a good photo but he was a gorgeous boy!
Also had Chocolate Orpingtons, Dark Brahma, Marans, and the most glorious huge geese, and ducks galore. Oh and bag-pipes of all colours. Sebrights! So cute. And Modern Game Birds (white), OEGB bantams, and a pair of bantam Buff Brahma - all of which I contained myself from buying![]()
Names are too much fun. Not a suggestion... just that your Lizabel caught my attn... Queen Elizabeth's nickname was Lilibet as a girl & one of her great granddaughter's got named Lilibet in honor.Dulci for short is nice!
I have names for two of the five. Lizabel/Isabel and Shehnai for the "sleepy" pullet and the roo are pretty set. The others are working names.
The three working names are Picabo, Beedles and Olive. Ideas welcome!
"Beedles" came to me on several separate days, so I keep calling her that, but I have no idea what that word means or is! It's not very pretty, it sounds so close to "Beatles" and reminds me of "Beetlejuice". I could use another name, but I do like the beginning part. Maybe Beatrice / Bea?
She and Picabo both approach me seemingly together, I get among everybody and see these two right up front. Facial features are getting more pronounced and at this point the only way I can differentiate the three. Beedles and picabo are very interested / friendly / curious, and aren't afraid to explore and lightly peck/pull threads on my clothes or hair, etc.; they have been that way since chicks.
They both easily step back on to my hand and like it well enough to stay, or don't usually see a pressing need to jump off unless it's a frisky situation or something else grabs their attention. Relatively bold, very active and yet overall pretty calm, classic Buckeye. The Buff Orpingtons, other than Diane, are snuggle-buddy lap chickens and positively Buddha-like in comparison. Anyway, Beedles is particularly forward with her head / beak near me, stretching her neck, examining everything very closely. When she does that she puts on a real beady-eyes look! Thus the name...
I'm not attached to the name "Picabo". I don't like that I fall into saying Picaboo in pronouncing it, but the first part fits, like Peeky or something, just the end doesn't. Maybe Piccolo? Just thought of that! Fits with the musical instrument ideas.
"Olive" is the newest name. She has a steady gaze. Her eyes are very centered in her eye rims (the skin of the "orbital ring"?) and the rims have a perfect almond shape.
Very hard to get close pictures of this gang, will try to get some.
