Olivia is my most hands-off chicken. My 7 youngest lived in a brooder for far too long while we struggled to build a coop and addition to the original dumb Amazon run and tiny pre-fab coop. (Yes, all the classic first-timer mistakes.) I felt so bad for the chicks towards the end of their in-house incarceration that I went in the spare bedroom every day where they were, blocked off furniture covered the floor in sheets and towels and let them run around. Most of them climbed on me - not Olivia. When it was time to go back in jail, I learned to get her first because several times when she was last she freaked out. One time she managed to wedge herself behind the TV cabinet. I had to get DH's help and he didn't mess around with chicken nonsense. He got a broom and nudged her back until I could get her. Someone on here told me Olivia would never forget that. I thought that surely couldn't be right - she's a chicken, how can she hold a grudge? She has. Poor baby.
Wow. I did not mean to bold that little dissertation. Sorry!

After having Mini w/ reproductive issues I resign myself not to hope too much in that area... but still the little sweetie lived 6-1/2 yrs... but no telling what pain she may have had. She had so many health issues & the vet saved her so many times.

I am quick to give pain meds if I think they are in pain. I want them to keep eating and drinking and pooping, and if they are in pain they are not as keen to eat.

His courtship of her may eventually involve him standing on it every time she's hungry. They'll figure out that when she's getting ready to lay...or a bit later. That would be a sweet thing and should go into the calendar contest.

There. You have a long ish term goal.

Meanwhile, re the ladies thumping him....

stay out of it!!!

Yup let the fight their own battles. Though I have to say in the mornings I usually give Mr LC some screaming at he is so bad in the morning! All eggcited and chasing and biting the poor girls, it’s the ones moulting whom I ensure don’t get assaulted by him. This morning I picked him up and walked around with him so he could see his ladies from up high - he likes that and will settle perched on my hand as we walk around and inspect his troops 😉 once he has seen everyone I put him down and he goes and eats.

What spoiled little turnip hahaha

Betty and Jaffarra’s crops were down again this morning. Jaffarra’s did have something in her crop but just a small amt. Betty had nothing at all.

I am so happy, I want those two to started gaining weight now.

Eli is next up

Each is an individual, some of mine just aren’t into visiting with me. And others are just pests wanting all the attention (right Sweetie and Goldie?!)

Yes they remember, but with time and patience you can help her learn that you’re not the bad guy. She will likely never be a lap Chicken but at least when handing her she won’t be so stressed.

Life gets in the way... we got back from a relative's funeral this afternoon 💕 Surprisingly, Suzu stayed in the kitchen obediently while we were gone. She was so-o-o excited to see us we couldn't keep her off climbing our legs!

That's great! Good job Suzu!

There is learning occurring with our resident house chicken.

Niamh was in the house yesterday and Enzo always likes to get a sniff of her tail. Normally, Niamh doesn't care.

Yesterday, she did.

Enzo sniffed her and Nuamh wheeled around. Enzo took a step back. Niamh lowered her head and flared her hackles.

I warmed Enzo to back off. Does he listen?

Nope. He leans in for a sniff of her beak.

Niamh attacks. Into the air, claws coming at Enzo.

Enzo was on the dining room floor and spun out before he was able to get traction and get away but escape successfully he did.

Niamh went over and tossed some cat food out of their bowls into the floor and then went back to her snack.

Enzo did not try to sniff her this morning.

Understandable. Is Lady F still picking at her?
She is too fast for Lady Featherington to continue actively hunting her. Lady Featherington has switched to attacks of opportunity. Things have settled a little bit.
