June 2022 Hatch-a-long

Day 13 for the current 17 Barnyard mix eggs. They all look very strong. I expect all should make it to lockdown.


I ordered 2 dozen hatching eggs. They’ll arrive the week after this hatch is complete. 3 of the 4 breeds or varieties I’m getting are autosexing or sexlinked: Welsummer, Legbar, and F2 Olive eggers. That will be fun. The remaining eggs will be Silverudd’s. The best part is they’re only coming from 180 miles away! I probably would have made the drive if fuel wasn’t so darn expensive.

That is a while..

It may have been sooner if they had hatched earlier in the year they hatched in June (2021) & started laying in January & Feb

It’s called Jones Backyard Hatchery in central Utah. I wasn’t familiar with them before searching for local Legbar breeders. However, they happen to have all the breeds I wanted. I’m looking forward to adding some of their birds to my flock.

I also got news the Marans breeder had a cancellation. So I got bumped up the waitlist and my chicks ship Monday!

My hatch has finished... 17 chicks! I candled the remaining 4 and it looked like the embryos quit sometime at or before lockdown (they did not fill the shell and I could see cloudy veins).

Technically we didn’t hatch these but they’ll be in the brooder with the chicks when they hatch this week

This is what I have left on day 15. I’ve got them sorted in the incubator by sources: 4, 5, and 8. Less than a week to go!

Its been interesting. The dozen I paid the most for, $1 per egg, has the least amount of eggs left. Continuing with that thought. The dozen I spent the least on, $4, is the one I have 8 left from. The final source was purchased as table eggs. Therefore refrigerated for who knows how long. 5 of those are left.

Oh man. I spent some time browsing pictures of my old flock. I’ve sure hatched some cute chicks! How will these new chicks compare? I should know by Saturday.
