Official Squatch Watchers

Good afternoon everyone!

I just got done sending three of my Cochin/Dominique cross boys (about 6 months old) on their way to freezer camp. Too bad @TexasSam isn't around. He wants to hear how these boys slaughtered. I guess I'll PM him to make sure he doesn't miss it.

They have WAY more breast meat than your average DP bird. They were also nice and heavy. I need to get the cleaned weights from them. The one REALLY annoying thing, was plucking the feet. One of them had quite a few ingrown foot feathers that were hard to get out. But I got it done. I've made a note that is something I need to check for when I'm picking breeders. I don't want a bird with ingrown feathers on their feet.

I am now down to 96 birds again. I have 3 eggs due to move to lock down tomorrow so I won't be breaking 100 until at least week after next!
Chicken math says that the chicks do not hatch until the pullets start laying eggs. The Cockerels don't count because you usually eat them or sell them.

Love chicken Math!

So, my meaties (LF Dark Cornish) don't count until I select them as breeder stock?

Oh and what about my half banty chicks? I thought banties were negative chickens.

Either partial or negative...or divide by 0 chickens....Love chicken math!

Well, I fear folks will think me a bad chicken dad... Out of my two dozen hatching eggs I got 5 Hollands to adulthood. Three cockerels and two hens. I've put them in my old coop, the one that came with the house (fort knox), but very small and tomorrow I'm moving the lessor two cockerels into an 8x8 shelter that I'll move on pasture. I'll select the best of the two to breed next year and the other the following year. I'm planning on hatching every egg I get from them this year, but unlike the other birds they don't get to go play in the tall grass and wonder around at will. But this is the only way I know to keep them safe until their numbers increase... Am I bad?

No your are not bad! You are breeding chickens and that is how you do it!

You have a breeder flock and a free ranging flock.

Perfect!

I scolded the ducks twice this morning... Was on the deck and down the driveway they walk... I scolded them, the girls gave me a lot of their opinions and then the drake turned them around and went back up. A few minutes later I catch them sneaking out the gate on the other side of the house with the same results, but the girls were definitely irritated at me and the drake's decision. They've discovered I have a creek running through my property, so you know where they're headed... That said, all the predators drink from that creek. Wouldn't they be delighted to have a duck for breakfast, lunch or dinner... Maybe even just for a snack.

Ducks really like water!

Predators like ducks.
