Official Squatch Watchers

7 hens counting Beavis, don't know what Ray and Duece are and Hobo dosent put out for whatever reason so technically 6 hens maybe she'll fancy Early more though who even knows with her. Not too worried about overmating, Negan is more of an eater than a lover and the girls have figured out how to trick him, they just jump, squat real quick and shake without even doing the deed...he's not a smart boy but he's pretty. ;) So 7 hens 3 boys and 2 dunnos =12
LOL Once they figure it out you can't keep them down. I hope they stay healthy.

How many do you have total? I have 13, 2 are boys, but one is a bantam and I keep Odin separated from everyone else most of the time so they can't be over mated.

Hello all,

Things have been crazy here. So, a little update.

The PVC run that I keep my LF Dark trio in flipped over today when the wind caught the shade tarp. My Buff Orp roo decided it would be a good time to beat up my Dark rooster. Before my SIL was able to get to the roosters, the Dark rooster had my Buff pinned to the ground. I had been worried that the Cornish wouldn't do as well, in a mixed flock. I guess I was mistaken. Still need to keep them separated for breeding purposes, but still, it's interesting.

Out of the 4 eggs I put in lock down, only one pipped and it needed a LOT of assistance. It has naval issues because it's butt got stuck in the shell. I don't know if it will live. It looks like it has leg problems as well. I've been having problems with the Franken-bators getting too hot. I realized today, that I can take them out of the styrofoam. I think that is helping. I think I am having problems because our house isn't climate controlled. We open the windows at night to get all the cool air in we can, and shut them during the day. We only have AC in two rooms.

I just showed Bea her baby, she wasn't impressed she sneezed on Deuce at least she didn't peck. I'm pretty sure Ray is Lulu's, she had no flips to give either. Negan however, literally pooped with joy. I swear he's a girl. My trio of littles has taken to snatching food from the bigs this one will probably not end well. They're tolerating them remarkably well, but we are talking food and really, really fat hens.

You guys. :(

One of my chickens died today, for no apparent reason. I've never had this happen before (don't worry, it wasn't Flower. It was Black Betty, and she was one of my most unfavorite chickens; she never was social, and never acted like she liked me. But still, I raised her from a day old chick, and it's sad).

I know chickens die suddenly, sometimes. She was in my first batch of chickens ever. They all just turned a year old almost to the day. She was a mottled bantam cochin and was acting totally normal (they all are), good weight, eating and drinking, active, was on her roost last night and out this AM. When I came home I let the chooks out in the backyard (it's 92 out right now, very hot) and they were all out except the silkies were clucking under the coop and didn't come out. I went to see and she was there in the corner, stiff and dead.

Do you think it was heatstroke? Or a heart attack? There were no external marks (my coops/runs are like Fort Knox, no predator could get in). Her crop was empty, her vent was normal, no signs of eggbound, abdomen was normal, comb/ wattles purplish and sunken in. Her one leg was kind of kicked out. That's it. Just dead. Plenty of food and water.

I just buried her. My hubby was too skeeved out t go anywhere near me (freak!) but he did dig me a hole. I don't need sympathy, I'm OK really. It's just weird. Did any of you guys ave this happen before?

It sounds like liver rupture. Australorps are prone to it.

Sorry you lost her!

Sorry you lost one, no telling what might have caused it.

On the bright side, I got a temporary FT job through my agency at a pre-K a half hour from my house in a school district, which could become permanent if the girl who is on maternity leave doesn't come back. I started today, and I have been working fairly steadily for the last week or two, so I haven't been on.

In a weird twist, one of the nurses in the district (and my contact person) was my former classmate and friend when we were going for our school nurse certification! She was like OMG I couldn't believe it was you whe I heard your name! So I have an in. :) If it works out, hopefully I can eventually get hired in this school district. :)

So that solves my money problem for the next 6 weeks! :

I have alot of catching up to do here. :caf I'm gonna drink a cold one now and do some reading! Hope y'all are doing well.... love ya's!
