Hounds are working breeds......

Um don't you have a lap dog?
He hunts squirrels and rats. Used to kill them if he caught them.
Hounds are hunting dogs. I like herding dogs. And i like lap dogs well enough, except most terriers. I find a lot of terriers too crazy for me. My mom has my Yorkie, she is a very calm dog and will just hang out with my Mom all day and night.

Terriers are meant to hunt rodents and other grounds dwelling animals, therefore they can be a bit hyper and tenacious, i.e., crazy. All dogs are bred for some kind of job, and most would be categorized, broadly, as working dogs. For convenience, they broke down the working category to hunting, terrier, and working (i.e., other jobs). There are subcategories within the working category, and working breeds can be just as hyper and crazy as other categories.

I refuse to have a pure bred border collie, but I've had 2 border collie mixes. Same smarts, just less hyper. The first one was half husky, easy to work with, but wanted to know what the school bus was and where it took the DDs'. Second is half Anatolian Shepherd, smart, protective, critical thinker, but Anatolian independent and stubborn at times. Wouldn't trade either one, and thinking of continuing with border collie/Anatolian mix, but might try border collie/great Pyrenees. Regardless, I'm sticking with half border collie.

I grew up next door to a Bassett hound, in the suburbs. They chained it out between our houses, maybe 20 feet apart. It barked. A lot. Every freaking day. Try to concentrate on homework with that going on. They took it hunting maybe twice a year. Other than that, its main recreation was barking.
The neighbors behind us have that but without the chain.

Good times!

Border Collies are smart, intense dogs. Never had one, but our Shepherd loves having tasks.
