@pitbullmomma
Did you see my member interview?
Thanks.Hi Rae!! I saw it but I didn't get a chance to read the whole thing yet...I will read it tonight! You are really pretty BTW.
So sorry.
Is the run covered? Hawk?
PBM, I'm sorry you lost one of your girls, but as the others have said, it happens. Don't beat yourself up about whether you missed her at headcount, just make sure you check for breaches in your run and coop, fix them, and try to make sure everyone is accounted for at the end of the day. You do the best you can, and remember that nobody's perfect, that things happen, and not everything is in your control. I'm glad it wasn't one of your favorites, and I'm also glad she wasn't found inside the run, because then it would have been more than just her.
You are an awesome chicken Mom, I just wanted to let you know that.
Oh my gosh. I am so sorry. I worry about that every day. My girls are so sweet and I just know one dayThanks for all your love and hugs, guys. Yeah, my runs and coops are pretty Fort Knox-ified. My husband built them tight. I'm pretty sure she somehow escaped my head count somehow, although how I don't know. It must have happened when I let them all out to free range in their area and then locked them in at night--maybe she hopped the fence--but there were only 6 of them in their coop so I don't see how I could have missed her.
It was pretty awful this AM, OMG. I think it was probably a hawk. Whatever it was tore her apart. I am pretty hardened but it kinda made me a little queasy. I feel so bad for her (I hope it was at least quick) and I feel bad for my girls for having to see that. I've been giving them extra treats and loving, poor babies.
My hubby checked the whole runs/coops this AM and said there were no gaps, holes, nothing. When I got home everyone was out clucking, and scratching like normal (unlike what I kept dreading in my awful daytime fantasy scenarios, where I came home to two coops and runs full of bloody, disemboweled, dead chickens everywhere, ugh).

Last night was fun. My tiny human passed out, like unconscious, while standing up. She was getting her dinner when she said she felt dizzy. I was walking towards her and I thought she was walking towards me, but she was falling. I tried to hold her up, but she's so much bigger than me and I'm super weak so I tried to hold her up and her legs went out. She hit her head on the cabinet on the way down. I couldn't do anything but help her fall. She doesn't remember any of it except being dizzy then laying on the floor. She laid down for a bit and was feeling better later, but said her head hurt, turns out she hit her nose pretty good. It was swollen, but hopefully not broken. She passed on the offer for an ER visit (not a fan of hospitals since her surprise surgery). This morning she said she felt better. Scared the taters out of her & me. She has had pre-syncope for several years, but has never actually passed out. So we might have a visit to the heart center again in our future. I don't want to bother with a visit to her pediatrician just to tell me to take her to a specialist.
