:frow Good morning Chicky, have a great day

Rancid happens in the summer. This summer it seems the feed is in short supply, not a problem with it sitting and getting rancid! I had to buy a different brand there were none of the usual on the shelf at Tractor Supply.
The article talks about getting the feed you will use in a month.
I have a farmer that mills the feed on order. I order a months worth when I have 2 weeks left. May start ordering when I have a week left.

When I had chickens in CA, in the 80's, I could go to the feed mill to get the feed. It smells so good when they first make it! I must say, the smell of the feed I get now is not as good, I am sure it is related to the freshness. Or, maybe it is like everything when we get old, it was better when we were young!

It is also a good idea to use all of the old and not mix it with the new. Oxidation is contagious, think of rust spreading. These guys want to add an anti-oxidant to the food. I just want them to sell us fresh food! Keeping the chicks on as good of grass as I can is my way of giving them fresh food with those vitamins.

I know my guy has fresh LOL. ... But sometimes he has trouble getting a grain and I have to wait a week. He gets the grain from a local grain elevator.
Eta.. I finish a bag before I open another, but I go through 3 bags a week

We do not have local grain elevators here.:( We do have one local feed co. The feed they sold me was labeled "chick starter" but it was 17% protein, I went back to the TSC 20% when they got more in stock. Small number of chicks, a bag takes a couple of weeks right now.
