It is actually quite easy.
For chicken soup I start similarly. I get my giant pot going with water, bullion, garlic, salt, pepper canned chicken stock if I have it and a washed whole bird.
Making a smaller pot is the same just with less bird.
Veggie soup I do with veggie broth, the same spices and simmer it to develop the flavors. Celery, onions and carrots early on to get that flavor going then add taters, peas, corn and whatever with just enough time to cook them through.

I make home made egg noodles which is also simple.

Packaged noodles work in a pinch.

Not sure if you even want to make any but threw it out there anyway.

Ditto, hubby loves it. Have you made it with turkey?

Let's talk about that MD and the puking cough.

You have a stethoscope, correct?
Are you hearing any wheeze at all at the tail end of inspiration/expiration? Close your eyes when you listen.
It can be so small of a sound. Like a squeak. Or a rub. A chirp.
I have a stethoscope and I've been listening to his lungs. It is hard to do when he is awake because he is constantly trying to grab it. Plus my hearing isn't that great. I mainly use the stethoscope to determine if the wheezing he is making if caused by his lungs or his throat. I also use my hands to feel for any rattling. I was actually quite good at detecting lung problems in my siblings by feeling for a rattle in their chest while they breathed. On several occasions I alerted my mom to an issue before she was aware of it.
On the other hand if he's producing copious phlegm (and /or snot) and you are hearing a silent spot or even a spot duller than anywhere else sounds, it could be pneumonia.
I've been listening all over his lungs and everything has always sounded even.
He's a year and a half?
Yup, turned 18 mo on the first.
Will he copy you?
See if you can get him to say the letter E. stretch it out. EEEEeeeeee!
You do it. Have him do it, as you move the stethoscope around. Pneumonia sometimes makes the sound of the letter "E" sound like "A".
I don't really have much success getting him to mimic noises unless they are outrageous (monkey, elephant, etc) and even that isn't dependable, but I'll try it.
The point I'm making is, if this kind of coughing continues I'd see the pediatrician. Sometimes a small dose of a bronchodilator will make a huge difference in surpressing that cough reflex that's coming from the inflammation in the reactive lungs and allows the child to get better faster.
I am holding that option open. He is sounding MUCH better today. He is coughing more but it is a more normal sounding (I have gunk in my throat) cough rather than a "bark" and he hasn't puked since 1-2pm yesterday. Once I got him to sleep last night he slept really well.

More horror stories about this particular ER doctor(gleaned from my sympathetic friend)
My friend, let's call her Hestia, is very susceptible to ear infections. She knows this, and knows what helps with it. She was having an awful ear infection, with terrible pain. She went to the ER to get the ear drops she needed to heal her ear infection.Guess which doctor was there? You guessed it. Guess what was wrong with her ear according to him? That's right, there wasn't enough humidity in her house. She went to see her normal doctor, who was infuriated at that doctor and gave her what she needed.

Another time, Hestia's little brother was having a seizure. They brought him to the er, explained to this doctor that he had these seizures periodically and what needed to be done. He proceeded to go away, come back, and tell them what a seizure was, and tell them that all the doctors in the hospital were incompetent.

This is VERY good to know.

MY bad doctor story:

I was about 3. This was back when a group of DRs would take turns being *on call* if a patient called in. Well, I had had the chicken pox. No big deal.... however, my temp suddenly shot up to almost 106°. My mom called the on call number, the nurse transferred her to the Dr, told the DR I had a fever. DR didn't even bother to look at the chart/note/whatever the nurse gave to him, cause he basically told my mom OFF for calling him about * something so common as chicken pox* and hung up on her. My mom didn't tater around... took me to hospital, where I was given 3 IVs and was rotated into ice baths and alcohol baths for almost 12 hours.

This Dr, literally had the nerve to have his NURSE call to apologize for the *oversight* of the fever. Mom basically told the nurse a not repeatable message to give to the Dr... which the nurse said she would HAPPILY pass on.

YEARS later, my brother was part of the waitstaff at a restaurant that that DR happened to be at. Brother then dumped an entire pitcher of ice water into the Drs lap. :D
