Official Squatch Watchers

Sassy honey, the mereks can be brought in by wild birds, purchased birds and may have been laying in wait in the soil.
No way to know for sure.
I think it was not entirely certain that it was mereks. Am I right or did I miss something?

Reds tend to be a lot bossier then many other breeds. I won't keep them for that reason.
Not confirmed. The necropsy showed lymphoma throughout, very consistent with Merek’s.

I have read up and mentally know it is not my fault. I know I could have birds live a great life and never have symptoms. I just have conflicting feelings and trying to proceed on.

Here is the latest progress on the workshop.

Paneling installed around the window and nest box on the floor with paint drying. Mini wants to play.

It sure is hard thinking they can drop dead any time. Mine have not been tested but it just seems logical. I plan to have fun with them and give them the best care i can.

I sure do love them! I love my chickens more than my dogs. I have read statistics and they say that a majority of the birds that “die for reason” is probably Merek’s. I say Sesame died from internal laying that probably led to an infection, but that goes with Merek’s too. I didn’t do a necropsy, so, who knows.

I'm thinking about insulating the coop walls with cardboard, it works for hobos. We are getting a couple more nights in the teens and i don't want any more issues and I'm trying to avoid running anything fiery in there. Learned that a couple drops of food grade glycerin is supposed to keep the water from freezing, we shall see.

I would think it would be more effort than it is worth to insulate with cardboard. Its not very thick so you would need lots of it.
Do you have power available at the coop? You can make a water heater pretty cheaply. Glycerin is not likely to make much difference, imo. Sorry.

Maybe for those temps? :idunno Never heard of it but then again I've never tried to keep the water from freezing. Lost cause up here.
