I think I'll stick with my plan then. There are boards that end not on a joist all over the place. The fact that the tongue and groove held them together this long is proof that it does work--to some extent. That board happens to be in the middle of room, but it was originally close to a wall in what was 2 rooms. I may be nice and repair some of the others too. My landlord has been very nice and has told me repeatedly he hates to see me go.
 
I don't know what my dominique is doing lol! She's molting so obviously she's not laying but she's wanting to play in the nests at roost time. She gets in there, arranges it tosses stuff on her back...weirdo didn't do that when she was laying. What do y'all think? Crazy chicken, maybe ghost laying pains? It's cute but she gets segregated at night due to her meaness so she's holding up the coop lockup terribly.

Move the bed over some...hide the hole and call it a day!
