I bought one of these last summer at TSC.
Probs the same principle as the link @apryl29 posted.
Best $5 I ever spent.

The smell is awful but the flies ADORE IT.

I tried one like that—used a milk jug. The flies oddly wouldn’t go by it.
I got the disposable ones and they work. Then I don’t have to empty them either. While still hanging I tape them shut and tie them in a plastic bag.
They are nasty! But they work.

Been all tatered off due to a thread about a hawk attack and the OP stated they have no run.

But they LIKE to be free in the yard blah blah blah.
