Official Squatch Watchers

Good morning sweet Squatchers!

I have my (rescheduled due to the snowstorm) job interview today. Time to haul out the old funeral/interview suit and uncomfortable shoes!

Wish me luck. It's only 5 minutes from my house, and would be ideal.:fl

I will report back later!

XO

I have so much to accomplish today.
Tomorrow I’m getting in the car with THE CRAZY PUPPY (in his crate for safety)
And driving to knoxville Tennessee to see my daughter for the weekend.
She’s really missing home and is very stressed academically and professionally and could use a good mommy hug, plus she’s been sick for two weeks so I made her a pot of my fabulous mom soup and froze six 16 oz containers that I’ll stick in her freezer.
Also she’s sad she’s “missing out on the puppy:hit” who went for his checkup yesterday btw.
Three weeks ago he weighed 10 lbs 6 oz
Yesterday he weighed in at
18 lbs 9 oz!!!

We figured by the time DD gets home for a visit in late summer he won’t really be a puppy at all.

I’m hoping for good weather so we can take advantage of all the knoxville eating spots with outdoor seating so we can take the dog with us.

I’ll maybe pop in but won’t be back home until late Monday night.

If anything huge happens
@Smuvers Farm -your in charge of getting ahold of me.

:loveLove you squatchers.:bow:love
You are the best of friends a chicken person could ever ask for! :celebrate:wee
@staceyj You are a wonderful mom! Your daughter will be very happy.

Have a safe trip my friend. Enjoy your time with her and your pup! Updates when you get back! :hugs

Ok,may I present the most budget brooder ever. The exact same setup as their parents, from unwanted guest stick light hanger to awful looking bowls that they actually like. One difference these guys got alfalfa hay instead of pine chips, had the chips outside on the porch found a mouse in the chips so nobody gets chips. Also excuse my desk I'm sorry it always looks like that.:)View attachment 1314747 View attachment 1314748
Is that a pop up play pen? That's a great idea! I used an x-pen I lined w/ cardboard.. then realized after I was done that I should have put a tarp under and over the bottom cardboard.. it was SOOOOOO disgusting when I tore it out after they went outside.

Ummm.... that isn’t where the toys belong. View attachment 1314823View attachment 1314824
I had the screen lifted a few inches to let flies out. He took advantage of it.
Bahahahahaa... How'd you get them back?

I just found something scary.

I added the 8 Cornish eggs I got this week to the Brinsea. Apparently, I was only getting eggs from one of my Cornish hens because I am now getting eggs in two different colors. After I checked on the chicks I was walking away when I remembered I didn't candle the 9 cornish eggs I set the past 2 weeks. Then I saw it my Brinsea was off. It has been off for a while. I have no absolutely idea of when it was turned off. The eggs are room temperature. I believe it happened sometime this afternoon. But have no way of knowing for sure. The power strip that my incubators and candler are plugged into has individual switches for each plug. The switch for the Brinsea was off. I candled the eggs. All but one seem ok (good veining) that one had a blood ring, and wasn't as developed as the others.

At most I lost 8 eggs. Which isn't too bad considering my girls have picked up laying.

I believe the 4 non-pipped eggs are dead. Two have extremely drawn down air cells and the other two don't look right. One of the two pipped eggs hatched after some help. I could then see the issue. Its neck won't straighten out. Its still curled in the hatching position. I'm hoping it rights itself overnight but we'll see if I have to cull it tomorrow.

The other egg, I helped some more as well. It is in a bad position. It is still working its way out of the shell.
That's horrible. I hope they make it. I would cover that light switch.. either w/ a plate cover, or put tape over it.

No I am not.
I am finishing what I started.
The experiment that happened all of a sudden.
It's really interesting to see if it works. IDK how much fertilized duck eggs normally cost
but I think buying them pre-fertilized and incubated would seriously cut down on hatching times and hatch rate. If you do get it to work, maybe holding the eggs to see if you feel movement, or candling them there to see if it's viable. I wonder how long they sit in the store before the toss them.. to get the most recently incubated eggs.

Sorry I made you do it.... :lau
Your laughing emoji makes me think you're not so sincere w/ that 'Sorry'.

Good luck! Fingers crossed.

Yeah, I read all about that.... kind of where the 3 S's that one BYCer commented about... shoot, shovel, shutup.

Having said that, we HAVE killed 2 opossums that had been attacking our chickens. That WAS our first and only choice.

1. We have no forest rangers or wildlife personnel to come get them.

2. We can't relocate them, as they would become a nuisance to other property owners.

3. The OP is talking about A CAT... it can be caught and turned in to the humane society. To me, the OP sounded like they just needed a BYCers *approval* to do what the hell they wanted to do in the first place, which was kill the cat.

In Illinois, where i live there is a leash law on cats.... but it's never enforced and several cities are enoughing fixed feral cats to control the rodent problem.... the stray cats by me just eat the rodents, they are scared of the adult chickens, who protect their young....and the hawks seem to stay away when a cat is in the poultry yards.
They working on a law that dogs can't be left outside when it's below 20f.... like mine will come in when it's 0f.. he loves the cold... they already passed a law that they can't be outside when it's cold w/- adequate shelter.

We have had a cat coming around since last fall. We named him tubbs, he's friendly, but we don't trust him around our birds, esp the bantams... Originally I'd called the APL about him, but they didn't have any openings at the time. I talked to a lady down the street who said she sees and feeds him. I see him on the trail cam at night, looking into the run, but he's looking for mice. Once we had let the birds out when I heard Willie squawking loudly & found Tubbs sitting in the woods near them. I shooed him off and put the birds away, but honestly, I feel like IF he was going to try to kill one, he had plenty of time to do it before I got over there. I wouldn't be ok w/ Tubbs hanging out unsupervised, but I'm the same way w/ 'my' cats, even though they're super old. The only animals I trust hanging out w/ my chickens are the wild bunnies we have.
