You guys, I just found something horrible.

I went out to check on my broody Molly because tomorrow is supposed to be hatch day. I lift Molly off the eggs and I smell something HORRIBLE. I look and I see 8 eggs and one dead chick. One of her eggs exploded. The dead hatched chick that was covered in nasty egg goop. I moved Molly into another box with fresh hay and I start moving her eggs over. Besides the dead chick, two more eggs were dead in shell. They were next to the nasty egg and were covered in goop.

There are still 6 in tact eggs and one of them is pipped with a baby that is very much alive. Molly got her nasty belly feathers clipped. hopefully the rest hatch fine.

I wish I had candled a few days ago like I wanted.

Oh yuck. Sorry for the losses, but glad you checked her in time to save some....and to get her cleaned up!
I have a broody call duck hatching ducklings now too, and a broody bantam cochin hatched 2 today, one of the chicks was pecked so badly on the head, I'm not sure if it will survive. But I put some Neosporin on it, moved the broody and all the chicks and eggs. Those other hens are getting "for sale" signs tomorrow.

Wow that video makes me so angry.
I know I saw them doing the upside down leg thing at a store. And I told them it doesn't work that way. If you were upside down you would fight too.

So what they are determining is what chicks are the sickest. Those are the ones who wouldn't fight back being held by the neck! Almost want to ask the poster how many roosters she ended up out of the ones who survived.
Why I don't buy chicks from TSC.
I bought mine from there but thankfully the one I bought it from was all people that own and care for chickens too. The pins were clean and they never did that. Thank goodness! And they were in the country lol.

We used the feathers on the wing method, and it worked perfectly for us. We could definitely see the difference between the roos and hens. Or biggest thing was getting them to let us only purchase one, it took some convincing.
does that work on the keets? I have done it on chicks... but I dont usually have a problem telling the difference in Roo and Pullet. Between the comb and attitude the roos are very easy to spot. Lol
