About ten years ago I was frustrated with my dog having recurrent ear infections and hated the cycle of antibiotics and that gross ear cleaning stuff from the vets which almost always contain glycerin (a sugar).
I stumbled upon a cocker breeders website and tried their recipe for a home mixed ear cleaning solution and Darn if it didn’t clear up the next infection in just a few days without antibiotics.

I told my vet about it, and with his blessing I used it the next few times it occurred even though they’d become farther apart because we eliminated grains from his diet.
Some grains like oats he does fine with but wheat really flares him up. Even a pizza crust snuck to him by DH will result in a bad ear a few days later.

Eventually my vet started using it on his dogs and two years later it became his first course of treatment for all the ear infections that he saw.

I’ve never looked back.
I use it for ear cleaning every couple of weeks, more often if he swims.

Yes ears are clean. My big guys have floppy ears so have to be kept clean.

That mixture is a good one. Thank you for linking it.

The fly issue is a PITA! I pick up and bag every time mine go potty. My neighbor on that side on the other hand........
They have 3 large dogs (think english mastiff). Two of them have chronic runny poo. They have a pooper scooper company come in twice a month. NOT CLEAN!!!!

Her bites look like small bumps the diameter of a number 2 pencil lead. They aren't on the edges but are on the nonhaired part of the ear. They are not deep inside so I can actually see every one of them. I will tackle her and get a wipe down done with straight alcohol......hoping to keep them dried out.

Here’s why I think it works:
The alcohol dries
The white vinegar adjusts the ph
The boric acid kills yeast (and bugs) plus it stabilizes the solution
And the povidine is antibacterial

You might want to pick up some dyphenhydramine spray while you’re out. Spray some on a cotton ball and wipe the ears. It’ll keep the dog from the next problem which will be an aural hematoma from scratching and head shaking.

Or oral Benadryl ...

So far she is not digging at her ears or acting irritated by it at all.

I am lucky to be able to be home with them. I can watch things closer.

Would that spray be available at petsmart?

I want to be prepared just in case.
