Poke berry doesn't have a woody stem. And elderberry flowers in clusters like queen anne's lace and the berries form on those clusters.
 
So I was thinking about the age old problem of hatching roosters no one wants. I know there are lots of old wives tales about which eggs contain a female but I was wondering if anyone ever studied the ratio of male to female a hen produced.
I know hatcheries have no idea what hen layed what egg but a much smaller operation could monitor that.
My thinking is that in humans there seem to be men who generally produce more of one sex offspring. (My BIL is 4/4 on girls) With the hen being the one who determines chick sex are there hens that have a tendency to produce more females?

I read somewhere that they believe pointier eggs hatch out to be males. Idk how scientific the testing was though.
 
Molly decided to stop being mama to her chickies. She roosted with the main flock and left her babies behind last night. This surprised me because she mothered her last batch of chicks for 15 weeks. She mothered this batch for only 6 weeks. Thinking about it, it sort of makes sense. She hatched her last babies at the end of September and so it was the middle of October when they were this age and the nights were cold, so they still needed her. So, we moved the babies in with my Banty pullets and moved the Lavender guineas, EEs and some of the older Cornish chicks out into the main pen.

I have hatches from 11 different hens and get 1 pullet
I know the pointy long egg being roos has been proven not true, ...BUT they are trying with calibers to get a more accurate L x W ratio with some success..
SI = (W / L) × 100
Take eggs from same hen and pick the ones that have a SI of 80 or above

I do think some hens just live to make roosters "no idea why". Lulu made nothing but roosters and I know for a FACT it was her because I waited on the eggs! 3 eggs 3 boys. I did 1 Tucks egg and boom, pullet. The pointy egg deal is malarkey, Tucks hatched from an egg that I had to candle so I could place it properly on the right end.:caf
