Official Squatch Watchers

Ok... my plan was order from Greenfire Farms and get only sex linked breeds. Their birds aren’t cheap but I felt like I was paying for quality.
I’d like to add Swedish Flowers again but at $29 for straight run only I didn’t want to risk more boys. Same with some of the breeds my mom fell in love with.

My question is has anyone ordered from hatcheries and which ones? I found Appenzeller Spitzhauben at My Pet Chicken for $5 for a female. For $5 if they are wrong and I end up with a boy I won’t feel as bad spending the money.

Hatcheries to me have such a bad reputation. In how they hatch (quantity not quality) and in condition of hatch and care.

How do I know they are a good hatchery?

Help! I’m getting chicken fever.
they aren't a hatchery
they are a middle man selling some other hatcheries chicks

So good or bad? How can they sell day olds if they aren’t hatched at the same location?

I’m open to suggestions.
I think @Chickassan and maybe also @pitbullmomma have ordered from MPC and had good experiences.

I think a lot of people also use Meyer or Murray McMurray.

I have heard some bad things about Greenfire from some of the Cemani breeders on this site (I think maybe it was Pyxis or Ravenscroft that has some really negative experiences with them).

I think one thing to consider is where the hatchery is located relative to you?
For example, I am thinking of ordering from either Privet or Ideal because they are nearby. I have chick fever too!

I went through Meyers, they're pretty close to you. Sexing was perfect and they wern't crazy expensive.
Nobody is sick or ugly but you've seen Rene is a midget and Dutch has that wonk comb. Personality wise though I couldn't ask for better.
They are super nice too, if you change your mind on what you want just call and they'll do it fast and not be rude about it.:)

I got my first Faverolle eggs from MPC. They were nice people, the eggs were good too.
The only issue I had at all was they were a little expensive, but my only other option at that time was ebay and I don't trust ebay for eggs unless I know the seller personally.:)

Many that are listed as hatcheries are middle men. The chicks actually ship from where they were hatched. Soooooo misleading!

If it's nice layers you want I would go with meyers. If it's show birds (high match to SOP) that would take finding a breeder.

After all my losses I want healthy!

Looks like MPC uses Meyers and they are in Oh. Might have to go on a road trip .... hhhhmmmm

Speaking of wonky combs--

Her Mom is a Silke Cross and Dad is an Isbar.

She has a braille comb. Both sides have that extra row of bumps. Like a Pea comb added to a single.
