Chickens have it easy in the raising chicks department. Dad barely does anything after donating the sperm. I wonder if artificial insemination for chickens is do-able?
I have read that it is but that the time to live for the sperm is short. I do not really know though

I know that some endangered Hyacinth Macaws have been. They trained the males, and the females were right there. Parrots raised by people often will not mate other parrots, they want to mate their owners! That is Dylan's problem, and why the research I am doing. Lot's of us would like to breed our hens, but are not allowed roosters. Horse and goat owners use AI a lot.

On the breeding and a couple of the rare breed threads, there were some posts about AI with chickens. For the Rare breeds, It was considered as a way to get new genetics in from places like Spain or to Australia.

Not being able to keep it viable seemed to kill the idea.

I do not know why bird would be different from mammals like sheep, horses and cattle though

I suspect bird's high body temp and metabolism could factor in. Hens seem to keep viable semen stored for quite a while!

I have Heritage Cornish and a lot of Cornish breeders, particularly of Bantams, do AI because the males have a hard time "connecting" when they get older. But it is best to do the transfer within minutes of expressing the sperm. If you want to hatch chicken eggs, just buy fertile eggs or graft chicks onto a broody. It's easier.

Here's more babies to drool over. Mostly silkies.
