Well day one of the Odd Squad went well. No fighting, though the General did assert his pecking precedence right away. He dropped a wing, did some dancing and grabbed a couple of necks. It was pretty tame, and only lasted about 2 minutes.

So @HuffleClaw the Silkies actually acted like chickens yesterday! They spent most of their time near the guinea, but did quite a bit of pecking and scratching around. Maybe they are just to meek to be with the other birds. I don't know... Pearl, Flip and Flop are all submissive, and the General is pretty dominant.

Maybe you need to trim their bangs so they can see where they are going:p

Good morning! :caf

I enjoy having you along!

When I was going to do quail, it was going to be for eggs and meat. With the ducks, I'm not very comfortable with slaughtering them. I've considered it a couple of times, but just don't think I could go through with it.

With the chickens I sit right in the middle in regards to my emotional standpoint. My hopes are that by raising them with the intended purpose of providing for the family, I'll be able to give them a happy and healthy life with a honorable death. I don't have a problem with killing an animal to eat. I have a problem smiling at that animal, feeling compassion for it, then lopping off it's head.

That being said though, I still believe I can provide my family with better quality meat while providing that chicken with a better quality life than anything perdue produces. I can go grab a bag of coffee beans from the cabinet and track it all the way back to the individual plant, but I can't do that with any of the meat here.

Rule 303 (short version)
If you have the means at hand, you have a responsibility to act.

Why does talking about feeding my family feel like such a dreary subject? :idunno
I am just like you are. We did raise some quail for meat and eggs and that did not bother me. BUT the thought of my ducks being in the oven kills my soul although I don't have issues with other people doing it. I love my quackers!

Is the chicken in the first pic a Serama?
It sure is cute! :love
Cute Silkie and guinea, too! :love
Yeah, that's General. The Serama roo gifted to me for my birthday. He's very tame with people, but a bit aggresive with the other Seramas. He loves Pearl though, and she cries if I take him out of sight.

I don't think I could raise a duck without falling in love with it. Not all chickens are cute, but even ugly ducklings are cute. :D

seriously I cannot imagine my life without ducks anymore. They have become a staple on my homestead! If I am sad I go sit with my ducks and life is all ok again. :love
x2 I am the exact same way! If I'm sad or having a bad day I just go watch my ducks.
Ducks are great creatures, I can't imagine life without them. :love:love:love:love:love ducks

BACA does a lot of good work for kiddos. We used to host some of their meetings at a bar I used to work at in Texas
That's pretty awesome!
Hey you may start a trend alarm roosters for getting kids up in the morning. I wish I’d gotten into birds when my kids were young. We always had dogs cats caged birds even a rabbit at one time had goats too but never chickens an ducks till we moved out here. Grandkids live to far away to have enjoyed it often. So that’s very cool your boys will grow up with birds and learn about caring for them and where their food comes from.
I missed this comment...
I love watching X interact with the birds. He's so careful, and wants to make sure the birds is safe. It just warms my heart watching him.
