It's the older 2-year old drake that's stalking the newbies. We don't know yet how many young drakes we got in these 2 hatches.

Hey everybody - do you put leg bands on your ducks?

If so, what kinds are there, are there some that are safe, durable and easy to install for clumsy people?

My older drake also is keeping a close eye on my new little Call Duck female that was born in March. That is why I am keeping her separate along with her mate that was born at the same time. My two young Rouen drakes were hanging out by their enclosure also but none of them can get to her. I am rehoming 3 of my large drakes the end of next month, hopefully, then I will set her out with the others. I forgot to close up their enclosure a couple of days ago while I was cleaning out their waterer and they both walked out of their pen. The only duck beside them was my Muscovy female and they just stood with her like they were best friends. I hurried up and told them to get back in their pen which they did as the others were all out in another section eating grass. I was glad they listened to me, lol.

I have never but two of mine that I let a college student borrow for a summer project for college banded my two Mallards from California. I was glad that he did as I can never confuse them with any of my other ducks that I have raised.

I just saw someone else ask about this last week so if you start a new thread and ask maybe someone who uses them will reply. Biggiest problem I have seen is people forget about them and then they have grown into the legs of their birds ouch.
I have two Legbar hens who are identical I put a tie wrap on one so when I worm or use Ivermectin on their necks I am not doing the same one over again . They have to be checked often especially when the birds are growing.

That would have been my next question - what's the safe age to put on the bands so they do not restrict growth / circulation. OK, I'll try and look up the thread, thank you!

Since I did not band my Mallards I have no idea how they reacted to being banded. They never seem to notice them though and have never acted any different after I got them back from the young man that used them for a College experiment. I am glad none of this horror story happened to them. Thanks for sharing.

I have only done 2 chicken hens and neither acted like anything was wrong. They were both adult size at the time and still have the tie wraps on I do check them every once in a while .
