I was changing the ducks from the dirty coop to the clean one and lost a pekin. My coops are horse stalls so right next to each other. It was the first time the ducklings had been out so i had to use the broom of death. There are 17 of them so lots of scurrying around was had. I thought I had them all but headcount was just 16. I looked and looked but didn't find her anywhere. I decided Wile must of heard all the noise and got her. So the next day there she was having survived a night out in the woods by herself. Opened the coop door and she ran again into the woods. A 2 hour hunt ensued. Gave up again. Went to check after dark and there she was again trying to get through the wall of the barn. Tired cold hungry and thirsty. I finally got her in. Never had one survive two days in the wild alone.
Her name is likely Bea Grylls. 😉

With all the warm weather and the rain we recently had, the dux-pond has thawed. Guess how i know…

Before i came out with the supper-bowl yesterday evening half of my flock ran off to the pond. So far it was quiet up there overnight and nobody got eaten but i don't like it.

Almost all of our young ladies have laid an egg today. One egg was gray and one young duck is still thinking about it all. From the eight 2023 ladies, a single egg. Boo! But really it's OK and sensible for them to have a holiday.

There was an attack on the ducks last night... or they simply got super scared. It was dark already and suddenly the (almost) whole flock ran screaming and flapping away from their coops toward the human house... They would not return, it took a while for them to cool down enough to approach their homes again. And even then they ALL crammed into a single one which is unheard of, usually the 2 flocks insist on staying separate for the night.

And then as I was getting ready to close everything up... QUACK QUACK from the outside orchard and there was another duck, must have run in the other direction vs. all the others. Stiff with fear, hardly moved, could be picked up or turned around or whatever, like an owl in daytime.

I carried her into a barrel of water to try and relax a bit and then into the duck house with the others. She seemed fine - no obvious wounds, no large areas of missing feathers.

Today she is limping and is keeping away from everybody else, while they explore around she is just standing in one place not doing anything.

So I brought back the duck therapy dog crate, stuffed it with straw, used the dog's bowl holder which is very studry and prevents the bowls from being flipped. In one bowl she has water with a vitamin/mineral powder and in the other, the duck superfood, peas sprinkled with yeast. She is eating and drinking normally and at a good clip.

Maybe she's just very much stressed and needs a day or two to recover. I guess the time to merge her back into the flock will be when she starts quacking about it -- she's been very silent.

So glad to hear that none of them got killed by whatever was after them. I pray that she is alright and recovers soon.
