This is Springer, our self adopting "barn" cat. One morning I walk out front and find this 6-8 week old kitten hiding under our rv. He was tiny and frightened, though looked very healthy. By all means he looked like a well taken care of pet, not feral at all.
We made posters and informed our online neighborhood board, but nobody contacted us, at all.
It took about 3 days for the little guy to let me hold him, but once he trusted me we where friends. I tried to get him to come inside, but he just wanted to leave. The best I could do was a box in the garage.
Our larger (19lbs) american hairless terrier, Dino, instantly became the kittens new mom. Which is a bit funny as Dino is a fixed male, but made a great mother none the less. Dino would kepp him out of the road, clean him, and show him how to be a good dog. It's kind of funny as how they both do a couple things similarly to how the other species does. (shame Dino doesn't bury his poop) Dino has the semi-prowl thing he does, and Springer will kind of jump at my shins like a dog would. The 2 make a very comical pair.
He never grew very large (lighter & 2x2 for size comparison), but he is solid muscle. He's literally about 1/2 the length of our other cat, but twice the weight. He's taken the "barn cat" title for himself, and is on a HIGH protein diet via the local mouse population. By the way, I didn't even know we had so many mice here, holy crap, there's a bunch.
He generally has no interests in the ducks although a close eye is still kept in him. He is an amazing hunter... However the ducks are easily twice his size, and 15 times the size of his normal prey.
I've grown to love Springer quite a lot. He likes to walk with me through the garden, and just sit on the porch with me.
