I am currently getting 7 eggs out of 14 hens and 1 duck a day. Thats pretty good for winter. What's everyones tips for keeping eggs fresh for extended time? They take a 6 week break in the heat of summer so thought I should practice now while they're plentyful

The hatchery sent straight run Mystic Marans to my work this week. I was walking by the tank, looked in, and thought it was weird that some looked barred.

Thought about it for a second and went, wait, they wouldn't send a sex-linked hybrid to us as straight runs, would they?

Yes they would. Mystic marans are apparently a cross of BCM roosters over barred rocks hens.

So anyway I picked six pullets out of the tank and went on my way with my 'straight run' chicks, lol.

Congrats on your pullets. Day 73 with no rain here. None in 10 day forecast. sent 4 more cows down the coast yesterday where there is still pasture. Down to 9 from 21. At least I still have my sweet bull. He's Brahma so is tolerating the heat well. My big trees are starting to die now. Sigh, nothing I can do about it but fret.

I had to check this out. Very interesting. But it says start with clean unwashed eggs. That's an oxymoron around here. Do you guys actually get clean unwashed eggs. Even when the girls use the nesting box instead of just plopping them every where, they are pretty clean but I wouldn't consider them clean.
