Thank you for this. I bought my first 4 hens from a reputable breeder two years ago, they are nice examples of their breed and sweet temperaments. My neighbor talked me into taking 3 chicks from his 6 chick minimum purchase. They were sold as Ameraucanas but after reading your article it is apparent they must be Easter Eggers. Yellow greenish legs and feet, they’re are only a couple weeks old. It’s no issue to me, healthy and friendly is my biggest criteria.

Good article. I’ve read many times that it’s good to add apple cider vinegar to their water, but no one ever says HOW MUCH vinegar to water. Can you tell me the ratio of vinegar to a gallon of water please?

I am new to chickens after years of wanting them. I am having a large run built onto my Amish built coop. I have four very spoiled young ladies and I am loving this more that I even imagined.

I’m looking for all the little “extras” now I can add to their run to make it better.

I got one Buff Orpington, now 5 weeks old. I hope she does as well as your girls. Great insight on the fun you can have with these chickens.
This is as cute a coop as I’ve ever seen. What an adventure and what a great husband you have!

I read every word and took notes on the mama hen heating pad method indoor but now you’ve convinced me to do the set-up outside. I also have ex-pens from my old dog show days and dog crates. I likely won’t get my chicks until late May so the weather will be favorable. Fingers crossed I can do this ... I’ve waited a long time for a little flock of my own. Thank you.

You CAN do this...I ain't the brightest crayon in the box and it has always worked for me! If you have any questions or problems, there is a Mama Heating Pad thread and lots of people there to help. I am traveling extensively this year, so I'm not on BYC as much as I used to be.
Sorry to say that hearing Guinea noises fixed me on wanting them. LOL I always loved how they look.

Being new to all this, I had never considered feeding fermented food to the chickens. I look forward to pictures when the weather permits you to start fermenting again. I’m a bit lost about the amount, If I’m understanding correctly, you are feeding a quart of f. feed per day, for about how many chickens? And, this is a supplemental feed given in addition to other feed?

BTW ... this made me think of this ... how do you figure how much feed to feed? I still have so much to learn ...

I have 7 chickens. Last year they were all under a year old. I will likely feed 2 quarts per day now that they are all big hens and we are hatching more chickens and some turkeys. We always offer dry feed in addition to the fermented, so you could say it is supplemental. I try to ensure that the fermented feed makes a significant portion of their diet though.
We plan to start fermenting again soon since the weather is turning better here in Illinois. Pictures will be coming soon.
